Sherman Alexie’s What You Pawn I Will Redeem
Reading Response #1

How has Sherman Alexie managed to detach Jackson Jackson from his present predicament, and what is the effect of this on the reader?

Throughout Sherman Alexie’s short story, What You Pawn I Will Redeem, the narrator, Jackson Jackson, manages to distance himself from his present predicament of being homeless and penniless. He does so while on a ‘quest’ (Alexie 18) to buy back his grandmother’s regalia, which he discovered in a local pawn shop. Jackson starts off with five dollars in which to turn into nine hundred and ninety-nine dollars over the course of twenty-four hours, and while he does manage to get his hands on some money, his nature and the viscous cycle state of his situation causes him to lose sight of his ultimate goal.

In the beginning of the story, Alexie introduces Jackson as having a fairly normal upbringing that unravels after he flunked out of college. “One day you have a home and the next you don’t,” (Alexie 12) perfectly encapsulates the main character’s situation. All throughout the story, readers are given the impression that Jackson has somewhat come to accept his circumstances, and that he is intelligent but simply unlucky to have turned out the way he did. This causes the readers to feel sympathy towards Jackson, and so they find it easier to understand why he acts so distant. He lost his chance at a successful life, and therefore he brings it upon himself to save his grandmother’s regalia, so in a way he will have accomplished something of value with his now meaningless life.

The main way Jackson detaches himself is through drinking alcohol with the money he should be saving towards his grandmother’s regalia. He buys, “three bottles of inspiration…to figure out how to raise all that money,” (Alexie 16.) The use of the word ‘inspiration’ sounds like an excuse, as if buying the alcohol is actually a vital part of the plan. Later in the story, after having won

Jackson states when he takes the regalia back, “Do you know how many good men live in this world? Too many to count!” This is significant because Jackson himself is a good man. He is an unlikely hero, when he was accumulating money to buy back his grandmother’s regalia, he was helping others that crossed his path, the Aleut Indians, Mary from the Korean grocery store, and his Indian cousins in the bar. Additionally, nearly every person he encountered returned the kindness to him.…

Alexie’s tone throughout the story impacts the reader’s perception of it. Throughout the text, there are many corrupt incidences told that ends with laughter. For example, there was one situation in which a Maori soldier had lost both of his legs but he tries to humor his condition by joking that his legs had ran away in heaven. Jackson’s grandmother then proceeds to be witty back and tell the soldier that “you have got to get your arms strong... so you can run on your hands” (Alexie 4). Another incident where something serious is met with happiness is when Jackson is saved from the railroad tracks by a white police officer. Once together and Jackson is awake, the officer asks, “how the hell do you Indians laugh so much?” (Alexie 7). Even though…

In Sherman Alexie’s “What You Pawn I Will Redeem”, closure is provided as through successfully completing the level of expectations and questions, the story provides a conflict and just exactly as you’d expect it gets resolved. The suspense leading up also provides us with a more ‘satisfying’ sense of closure as a majority of loose ends are tied up. Though it could be said the main conflict of the story gets closure, the overarching homeless background and horrible conditions the main character is in do not get resolve and we are left wondering what becomes of the protagonist even though he achieved his goal, we get satisfaction from the resolved conflict and frustration from the lack of overarching resolve as well.…

At this point in the story I couldn’t help but feel extremely happy, and relieved for Jackson because all he wanted to do was get his grandmother’s regalia back, it was the last thing that he had of her. Sherman Alexie did a great job of building up the characters for this story, it showed me how important culture is and to do what you believe in. Even though Jackson was homeless and did not have any money or family he was determined to get that money.…

Although Andrew Jackson is known for many defining characteristics such as his anger, courageousness, and fierceness, his perseverance was always more dominant. From a very young age, Jackson experienced numerous hardships which transformed him into the icon he is. For example in the 1970’s, Jackson and his brother were sold out by a neighbor and taken as prisoners by the British (Remini, 8). In the prisoner of war camps, many of the prisoners fell ill and caught smallpox. Jackson and his brother were two of the victims (Remini,8).…

The narrator in this story was a homeless drunk native. He told us that drunken natives are storytellers and liars and mythmakers. So was some of the stories he was telling us a lie? “Her name was Agnes, and she died of breast cancer when I was fourteen” (73). “When I was sixteen, my grandmother told me a story about World War II” (76). Was this all a lie or was the author trying to show that this man was really drunk and couldn’t remember everything from back then. Or proving his own point in the story when he said drunken natives were liars. I also was thinking that this man would spend mostly all of his earnings on things like lottery tickets, alcohol, and food than to rather save it and buy his grandmother’s regalia. Did he really want that regalia? Or did he just use every opportunity he got the money to buy something different. When he did get those things though, he did share his and got other people in need things as well. Like when he bought everyone five shots and when he paid for the Aleuts to have some breakfast. He did give back to his people. Those are very traditional and moral things to do as a Native American. Just like when he gave the twenty dollars to Kay. He may not have his priorities all together and in line but he does try and do the right thing when he has the chance to. I also liked when he had the opportunity to go to the authorities on the stolen regalia, he turned the policeman down because he knew it wasn’t the pawn man’s fault the clothing was stolen and it was his job to get it back on his own. I loved the end when he put the regalia on and started dancing. He said everyone stopped and starred. Now that part can be true because Native dances aren’t your typical dances that you see every day and people who have never seen it before would be take it by surprise. They are beautiful dances that catch a lot of…

The largest and most impactful way that Jackson heated up the political atmosphere was by creating the spoils system (Class Notes). The spoils system is still used in the current administration but Jackson fired every single worker almost and filled their occupations with his own supporters. One of the reasons this was highly corrupt was because even if he lost another election he would still have a large amount of power. The other reason was that Jackson could get more support and power for himself since people who wanted a federal job had to support him. One way this is demonstrated is through firing his cabinet members who would not do what he wanted. Jackson went through over 4 secretary of states and even more secretary of the treasury during his term (Class notes). This shows that Jackson was not very good at handling problems with his cabinet in democratic terms, and instead if they caused trouble for him or disagreed he just fired them and found someone else. This is exactly how the royalty worked in Europe, whenever another monarch rose to power and they wanted to seize it themselves they killed or got rid of the monarch of the kingdom somehow. Another way Jackson failed to handle his political party was through Samuel Swartwout who stole a large amount of money from the U.S. government (Document 6). Samuel Swartwout was a supporter of Jackson who…
