Most students would have to change their outside school schedules because of the new ones…
Schools would start fifteen days before the regular school year, which would be in August instead of September. By starting the school system earlier, students would be able to take first-semester exams before their winter vacation. The school board believes this would be an advantage to student who are in high school, because they would be able to take the…
Over all public schools, there are only 4% that operate on a year round calendar. In that 4% there are 2 million students learning under a year round basis. Besides, year round schedules mitigate education loss from the previous school year. It also tarnishes the tradition of summer break, according to “Should You Give Up Summer Vacation?” by Laura Kelsey. Evidently the year round calendar is a prime solution to alter failing grades and help struggling students catch up. For instance, some students are overwhelmed with work and drama that occurs in school. With that in mind, year round schedules have more spread out recesses eradicating the overwhelming school environment. Simultaneously, year round calendars lessen memory loss between long breaks. Thus helping students retain and understand their curriculum. Lastly, studies show that American students are less proficient in academic topics.…
When most people hear the words “year-round school” they automatically disagree without knowing all the information about the subject. The fact is that year-round schooling is becoming more popular around the United States and even the world. It is the twenty-first century, most school systems are shying away from the more traditional school schedules and turning to year-round schooling. In 1992, 25% of the United States attended year-round schools, 17.3% higher than in 1988. Therefore, in just four short years the percentage of year-round school more than doubled (Gándara). Year-round school could become a reality for all of America, maybe sooner than expected.…
First of all, it is difficult to manage time for other activities. It is hard for students to be doing after school activities such as sports. Text 1 paragraph 4 states, “Many high schools don’t employ a year round calendar because of sports schedules. Teams want to be able to take summer jobs. If students are in school year round, they can’t have a summer…
"A 2015 study indicates that more advance students were more likely to benefit from additional days in school than their peers who struggled academically." (Year-Round Schooling Explained).…
Have you ever wondered why teachers take a whole month to review everything from the previous year or why students tend to forget everything? Every year, students are keeping their calendars at hand and counting down the days until summer vacation. It’s the last day of school and when the final bell rings, kids are ready to do nothing for three months. However, is this really a good thing? The possibility of having year-round schools is at hot debate topic right now and it is time for change from traditional calendar schools. Schools should incorporate a system where schooling is year-round instead of having a long summer break because this allows for more learning and would prevent the problem of students forgetting everything they’ve learned the previous year.…
The three month summer vacation between school years that students have become so fond of, was originally created to allow students to help with the harvesting of that year’s crops. However, the harvest season no longer interferes with education as the massive increase of urbanization and various technological advances have eased the workload of farming families. As a result, there is now a major need to transition from a traditional school setup to a more effective system of education. As of now, more than 90% of America’s states have implemented at least one year round school system (Nat'l Ass'n, “Year-Round Schooling, Calendar Reform Statistics: Schools, Districts”). Year round schools, although they may decrease some the benefits that come with summer break,…
“Schools out!” The majority of schools in America stick to the traditional school year, attending class from early fall through the beginning of summer. End of the school year means the start of summer vacation for most students; over the years, summertime evolved into its own culture with specialized camps, family vacations, and little league games. While most would agree that children and even families love summer vacation, many are aware of its downfalls. One downfall is the difficulty students have retaining knowledge and information from the previous year. Typically, teachers spend the first six weeks of the new school year reviewing material from the last instead of moving on to the new material. The department of education has indicated the need for change. According to the Education Secretary Arne Duncan, President Barak Obama has called for a longer school year to help American students compete with students around the globe (Dessoff, 36). The future of America is in the hands of today’s youth. Students that attend year round schools are at an advantage over students that attend traditional schools in the area of knowledge retention and access to quality teaching staff.…
As proven it is a bad idea to switch to year round school because summer vacation cost a lot and summertime is crowded, students and teachers don’t benefit from year round, and finally brain drain is still an occurring problem. If year round schooling has so many positives, compared to “Top 10 Reasons Why Year Round School is a Good Idea,” then why aren’t more schools in the United States switching to year…
When most student are asked about year-round school they think it means giving up their summer, but that’s not exactly right. Year-round school doesn’t necessarily mean giving up summer vacation. There are variety of calendars school districts follow. The current school year is based on an outdated agricultural model, when families need to use their children to help them with a harvest. Most families aren’t like that anymore. It’s time to update the school calendar to reflect modern society. Year-round schooling calendar would be beneficial to students.…
We should have school vacations over year round school, so because people can go on vacations during the summer. Another reason why is because year round schools takes time out of the student's family plans. I am going to Florida this summer, and if we had year round school I wouldn't be able to go without knowing what the teachers are teaching. Also I would have a lot of homework to make up.…
The report was done by Barbara K. Ramos, Ph.D. (2004) Associate Professor of Education Chair of the Department of Education at Simpson College in Indianola, IA. This study takes a look at a mid-west elementary school transitioning from a school-within-a-school calendar. The school had offered both year-round and traditional calendars, to a year-round only calendar. Using focus groups and surveys assessed the acceptance of teachers and families with the transition, as well as factors they had to consider with the transition . Both teachers and families for the most part had positive reactions to the transition. Some teachers and families initially had a negative reaction to the transition. However after adapting to the transition their opinion became more positive both during and after. There was a significant difference in the satisfaction level by calendar for all five questions asked of parents. Teachers were 100% satisfied with the change from a traditional calendar year. The results of this study were very similar to previous studies done. Generally, both teachers and families were satisfied with the transition to a year-round calendar. Families and teachers who had experienced year-round schooling previously were even more satisfied during and after the transition. With the information from this report it will help to show solid findings on the positives of year-round schooling through…
In a recent study at YHS 97.1% of students would rather start school later. Students should be able to start school later when they're awake. Students will have more time to eat in the morning instead of starving all day at school. Students will come with more energy instead of being dead at school. Students attendances would improve and reckless driving wouldn't occur so often. If school started later the increase on grades and attendances would go up.…
As modern society advances at astonishing rates, it is a common occurrence that many mandated policies are rarely reviewed, and often become outdated. One of the best instances of this could be depicted by the modern school year. The school year was optimized for a different time, and as such, needs to be changed. The change to an all year school would allow for improved learning, greater knowledge, and an increased number of breaks throughout the school year. The need for change in the school calendar is very crucial, and be beneficial for multiple purposes.…
