have to be the main protagonist eleven-year old Marty Preston, his parents, the dog Shiloh, and Judd Travers. With the main protagonist Marty was just a regular eleven-year old living in Friendly, West Virginia who lived with a family and did what any kid would do explore, wanted to find new things, and most importantly spending time up in the hills behind his house near his town. In this story he is seen as the protagonist because he is the one that saves the dog Shiloh from an abusive owner that did not care about him. Marty’s parents were told as any other regular parents that took of their kids like Marty and his siblings as well as having everything they need. Also they are the ones that would not let Marty keep Shiloh in the first place. Marty’s dad in particular was a stern father because he would not let him keep him all because it belonged to the anti-protagonist in this story which is Judd Travers. They are also humorous at times as well. Lastly Judd Travers can be considered the anti-protagonist of this book because he treats his dog horribly such as malnourishment, and just plain abusive. He is also very quiet but also mostly serious all the time especially with what happens with him and Marty in the story. Judd is also an abusive dog owner.
In Shiloh the main problem that Marty faces is keeping the dog away from Judd and also keeping the dog a secret from his parents.
I would say that throughout the story the complications that Marty will face when helping Shiloh would be that he always tried to keep him safe and away from Judd as well as his parents. Also he did no matter what it took because he had formed a strong bond with Shiloh ever since they met so it would make sense that he would do anything for Shiloh. An example can be that one way Marty would hide Shiloh was he makes a home for him in an old shed up the hill from his house and that is where he stayed for much of the story. Also every time that they had dinner Marty would save food for Shiloh so he can eat and that shows how strong the bond was between the
two.
Although that was the main conflict throughout the story the main climax would’ve been when one night when Shiloh was in the shed a stray dog attacked him and so Marty’s secret was discovered by Judd and his parents. Also part of the climax was when Marty was going to Judd’s house to tell him he would not give up Shiloh he saw a doe and as soon as he saw it Judd shot it. Now in this part of the story nobody was supposed to hunt but Judd did and so he would have to pay a fine. Although Judd didn’t want Marty to tell the game warden and so Judd started to threaten Marty about it. This was the main climax throughout the whole book.
At almost the very end the resolution for all of this was that when Judd was telling Marty to not tell the game warden Marty said he wouldn’t but only if he would give him Shiloh. After this happened they both agreed and promised on there parts of the deal although the catch was that Marty had to pay Judd $240 dollars that he bought Shiloh with. The way that Marty was gonna pay for this was that he worked for Judd for twenty hours total. The jobs Judd gave Marty were tricky jobs that made his back hurt and also very thirsty. Although a promise is a promise and so they both fulfilled that agreement and Shiloh was finally Marty’s dog. This shows that if you do what you put your mind to it will all work out at the end.
My thoughts and my reaction to how I feel about this book is that after I read the whole thing I would say it was a pretty well written book because at some points of the story it made feel all sorts of emotion from sadness to even guilt for some of the characters. Also this book has a great storyline and plot because it always makes you think of what will happen even if it is just the smallest things in the story. If I had to recommend this book to somebody I definitely would because it shows a message that once you put your mind on something or strive to do something you can do it all you need is hard work.
