Ship Trap Island Descriptive Writing
While I was strolling on the beachfront, I happened upon a bottle under the slowly rolling waves. I picked it up, unscrewed the cork cap, took out the parchment coiled inside, and rolled it out on the fine sand to read the message. It was written in Spanish, but my years of education in the Spanish language had allowed me to effectively decipher it.

To whomever finds this letter, I was one of the sailors aboard the Sanlúcar, the Spanish cargo ship that crashed near the shore of this accursed island: Ship-Trap Island. We were on a cargo run to the port of Southampton after we left Spain, but while crossing near this island, we took a turn to a channel. That channel did not exist, and our boat capsized and I have no memory of the events immediately after. Me and twelve other sailors found ourselves awake in a dark cellar. He periodically came down there to physically train us, and there was an assortment of weights there. He also periodically forced us to run around a ringed trail around his chateau, which was to prepare us for the “game”.

He already took one of my shipmates to play, Carlos his name, and we have not seen from him since. I can only assume the worst: he killed him. As I write this, I am planning my escape from this wretched hive. When I am taken out for the game, I will jump out into the ocean. It will be a far chance, but should I wash up on the shore of the mainland, I will inform the authorities. Should I fail, whoever found this letter should make sure to tell the authorities of whatever land this washes up: take down Ship-Trap

On the following paragraph I am explaining the important of a Marine NCO and the role they play on the battle field. Truth out the history of the Marine Corps, The NCO always plays a key role in the military. There are the people that trained, guide, lead the junior Marines in all task or mission. They’re the ones that execute and supervise all tasks on the missions while maintaining control and discipline on the troops. Without the Marine NCO the main body of the Marine Corps will be in disarray and the officers will have a hard time running the operations.…

In The Wordy Shipmates, author Sarah Vowell talks about the Puritans and different aspects of the formation of the Massachusetts Bay Colony. Vowell makes a vague thesis about how the Puritans were a writing based group of people. Their lives were influenced by all forms of writing whether it is pamphlets, literature, or the bible. The Wordy Shipmates starts off with Vowell stating, “The only thing more dangerous than an idea is a belief. And by dangerous I don’t mean thought-provoking. I mean: might get people killed.” Vowell supports this statement throughout her The Wordy Shipmates as she heavily explains how religion plays an important role in every part of the Puritan lifestyle during this time. When Vowell talks about the Puritan lifestyle…

In Richard Connell’s short story, The Most Dangerous Game, is based around a famous New Yorker hunter who fell off a boat and swims to an isolated and much feared island, called the “Ship Trap Island”. Rainsford, a famous hunter in New York was travelling to the Amazon forest to hunt the Jaguar. While on board passing the much-feared Ship Trap Island, he heard three gunshots. Trying to get a better look, he went on to the deck but unexpectedly drops his cigar. Trying to reach for it, he fell into the sea without anyone responding to his cries for help. He decides to swim to the island where he finds a Chateau, with two Cossacks living in there. One was General Zaroff while the other was his mute and deaf giant assistant, Ivan. General gave Rainsford a dinner and some clothes, where General told Rainsford a little of his background and that hunting no longer excite him. Over time, he told Rainsford his “Game”, which is to basically hunt humans. Sailors of boats that were damaged would be sent off to the jungle with food, a knife and some clothes. If he can resist capture from Zaroff, Ivan or his hounds for 3 days, then he wins the game. But so far, no one has been able to achieve that. The next person he wants to hunt is Rainsford, and should he refuse, Ivan will kill him. Rainsford then uses three methods in an attempt to win the game. The first resulted in him getting caught, but General decided not to kill him then but to play a “cat and mouse” game. The second he sets a pit which killed one of the General’s hounds. Thirdly, he sets another trap that killed Ivan, but not the General. In the end, he jumps off a cliff to avoid the approaching hounds. General thought he was dead but when he returned to his bedroom that night, Rainsford was waiting for him there. Rainsford then decided to have a knife fight with General, admitting, “I’m still a beast at bay”, which the loser would be fed off to the hounds and the winner gets to sleep in General’s bed. In the end,…

“It would be difficult to describe the subtle brotherhood of men that was here established on the seas. No one said that it was so. No one mentioned it. But it dwelt in the boat, and each man felt it warm him. They were a captain, an oiler, a cook, and a correspondent, and they were friends, friends in a more curiously iron-bound degree than may be common…there was this comradeship that the correspondent, for instance, who had been taught to be cynical of men, knew even at the time was the best experience of his life. But no one said that it was so. No one mentioned it”.…

    I. There were two Great Awakenings in the U.S. The principal, which happened when the U.S. was as yet a settlement of Great Britain, occurred in the 1730s-1740s in New England. This development was a Puritan response to their observation that there was a decrease in confidence in the group, and it included their endeavor to recommit the group to the possibility of destiny (that individuals' confidence was in God's grasp and that they must be spared through their faith in God).…

    Barrier Islands Essay

    • 3 Pages

Barrier Islands, which are also known as barrier spits, are elongate, narrow islands of sand or sediment that lied parallel to the coastline and are separated from the mainland by a shallow sound, bay or Lagoon. Most barrier islands are along trailing edge and marginal sea coast where continental shelves are wide and gently sloping. The majority of the barrier islands in North America are along the Atlantic and Gulf Coast. The formation of the barrier islands is not fully understood. There have been many theories about their formation, but the current one states that barrier islands were formed about 18,000 years ago at the end of the last Ice Age. As the glaciers melted, the sea level started to rise and flooded areas behind the beach ridges at that time. The rising waters carried sediments from those beach ridges and deposited them along shallow areas just off the new coast lines. Waves and currents continued to bring in sediments that build up, forming the barrier islands. They range in length from three to a hundred kilometers in length and less than one to three kilometers in width. Their two major functions are: To protect the coastlines from severe storm damage and to harbor several habitats that are refuges for wildlife. There are four major zones in the barrier-islands: beach, dunes, overwash, and salt marsh. Each of these zones have their own function and type of natural life. It is natural for these islands to grow and erode and get washed away. They aren’t permanent; they are just accumulations of sand that form off the cost. It should not be allowed to build up in the barrier-islands because its dangerous for the people, eliminates important ecosystems and limits the island’s usefulness in protecting the mainland coast.…

Ship-Trap Island — true to its name. It has now claimed a hunter and author, Sanger Rainsford. However, there are other people on the island. Rainsford finds the house where the other people live, and he's greeted by Ivan, a deaf, monstrous man that can’t speak. Ivan, pointing his gun at Rainsford, was not someone you’d want to run into. Another man by the name of General Zaroff came down the steps. He signaled Ivan to put his gun away and welcome him to their home. They ate, toured the house, and went hunting later on. Rainsford was being hunted rather than hunting. After three days, he had successfully eluded the general, and he was the first to win the game. Still afraid for his life, Rainsford kills General Zaroff. He had already killed Ivan with one of his traps and one of Zaroff's best dogs with another. Fear can cause people to do things they don’t want to do, but depending on the circumstances, there can be a fine line between "killing" and "murder."…
