Shipping Lines Ticketing System
Chapter 1

INTRODUCTION

Rationale

Shipping services played a vital role in the development of modern economies. Nowadays, the shipping industry has grown tremendously with the introduction of highly sophisticated sea vessels. In the field of the shipping industry, computers are used by companies in order for them to have a quicker way in the issuance of tickets. A ticket gives the passenger the right to board a ship. It indicates that the passenger has paid for or is entitled to a specified service. In most cases, shipping companies encountered problems with ticketing because the passengers need to queue up for a long time just to buy ticket and ask for information. With the aid of computers, the company can provide an easier way of travelers with comfort.

The use of computers could help much lessen the work load employees and it can minimize the time and effort in searching particular information. It can simply be defined as a machine which takes instructions and perform computations and operations accordingly. It can work as a continuous worker and provide outputs for respective inputs in a pre-decided manner, so there is no need to enter one input at a time. It can process various inputs simultaneously. Because of this exclusive feature, computers play a crucial role as an application device in application based services.

In J & N Shipping lines, the teller spent considerable time in supplying passenger’s data and calculating discount fares to minors, students and senior citizens in the ticket. And sometimes an issued ticket contained the same sleeping cot number issued to another ticket that caused confrontations among the passengers. Because of this, the researcher was interested to design and develop a ticketing system for J & N Shipping Lines as basis in implementing an automated system and to provide better services to the passengers.

Theoretical Background of the Study

A ticketing system is composed of a computing facility. The computing

Over the past years, it seems customers have heavily relied on airline reservation systems to book their tickets, reserve seats, pay for the tickets, and check-in-online. This has been very convenient for customers to plan their trips. These systems have also allowed the airlines to manage their whole flight inventory. They have the all the information stored and recorded and maintained. It provides a platform for communication between airlines for their “code-sharing plans” this also allows agents or other ticketing office to see real time information such as booking or seat availability (Laudon & Laudon, 2013). Because all of the parties rely on heavily on these systems it is important for Airlines Company to have it. A perfect example of the chaos that is created when one company decides to switch to a newer version of this system would be the case of WestJet.…

Around 90% of world trade is carried by the international shipping industry. Without shipping the import and export of goods on the scale necessary for the modern world would not be possible. The international shipping industry transported 6.2 billion tones of cargo in 2003, with a fleet of 26,280 deep sea cargo ships. Poor and inefficient port handling services have become one of the main causes of inefficient logistics in shipping industry. Such as poor communication, inaccurate paperwork, or inefficient port operation, upset shipping lines greatly.…

Assume that domain analysis is complete and DAD is ready for reference. The analyst also has a fair knowledge of the system and the system environment. For the sake of convenience and to reduce complexity at this stage in OOA, we are ignoring certain conditions, constraints and features that the real system may have. For example, we are not considering cancellation of tickets as a requirement. We assume all passengers irrespective of their type (senior citizen, military personnel, special category passengers etc.) are the same, and therefore are charged with the same fare. We begin with the statement of requirement of the system. ü System Requirement l The passenger has a prior knowledge of the reservation and ticketing system. The passenger arrives at the railway ticket counter and interacts with the counter clerk first through an enquiry and then follows the process of form filling, tendering, payment and collecting the tickets. l Passenger accepts the ticket or leaves the counter. l Passenger seeks information on fare, train timings and availability of tickets. l Passenger can have single ticket or multiple tickets. l Journey begins on a day and will be over with one break in between. l Passenger is identified by name, age, sex and address. l Trains are identified by name and number. l No receipt is issued for money transacted. l Output of the system is ticket(s) with details. l The process is triggered through a form filled by the passenger detailing the requirements of tickets, train, date, etc. l A form is used for each train. If the journey requires use of multiple trains, separate forms are used for each train. ü Identify the Actors The actors in the system are the passenger, the counter clerk and the reservation system consisting of form processing, reservation, fare computation, ticket processing, ticket printing, collection of…

The system is user-friendly, making the employees and franchisees very happy at the convenience now afforded to them. Now, after the implementation of the AWATAR software, the process of collecting data from the booking counters and sending them physically to the central office has been eliminated altogether. Likewise, the use of the electronic ticketing machine (ETM), a lightweight, hand-held computer that computerizes the issuing of tickets, by the bus conductors reduces the burden of multiple tickets, ledgers, and accounts. The ETM also instantly recognizes the radio frequency ‘smart card’ passes issued to pass-holders. Besides ensuring transparency of operations, the data generated from the ETMs are used for multiple…

Electronic Ticketing in the airline industry was devised in about 1994. E-ticketing has largely replaced the older multi-layered paper ticketing systems, and since 1 June 2008, it has been mandatory for IATA members. Where paper tickets are still available, some airlines charge a fee for issuing paper tickets. When a reservation is confirmed, the airline keeps a record of the booking in its computer reservations system. Customers can print out or are provided with a copy of their e-ticket itinerary receipt which contains the record locator or reservation number and the e-ticket number. It is possible to print multiple copies of an e-ticket itinerary receipt.…

Formulating and proposing such infrequent yet functional system takes several times for us to come upon this proposed title. We spent several hours thinking of a possible problem that needs solution, existing systems that needs further improvisation and creativeness. We choose to build up this kind of system not just to have a proposal and compliance for this subject but to help and improve the existing method used of St. Peter in their unreliable manual booking transactions.…

The rapid development of information technology has made the management of on-line ticket orders, payment and ticket generation possible. The implementation of the specific system requires solutions to a number of problems. Several big projects have shown that the final introduction requires the preparation of models which form a good basis for the construction of a high-volume system. The implementation opportunities are well illustrated, and the low-budget project allows the preparation of the optimal system. In this project the aim we set was the creation. The future success is also supported by the fact that the project involves many highly professional organizations and institutions, as well as a college used as a research site to carry out the research needed for the ticket storage solutions. The planned system uses modern IT devices and involves the use of the Internet as well. The preparation is assisted by the organization involved in the ticket management thus supporting the consideration of real problems during the creation of the theoretical model. The aim of the solution to be developed is to give a general definition of the requirements of modern ticket sales systems, which will prevent the companies using the system from making multiple investments for development and the customers from the obligation of purchasing new and different equipment. Due to the general nature of the system to be developed, connection will only be necessary to the individual application points; the end-users' device will, therefore, be capable to carry and use the tickets purchased at the application points. The system to be developed can immediately be used in a wide range of areas, thus providing a contribution to make the information technology more generally accepted and to build the information society.…
