Shirley Jackson's Argument Analysis
Jackson, when looking for a way to prove this identity theory false, claims that his argument exposes truths about our consciousness that cannot be simply deduced by physicalism. He argues that the physical truth is not the whole truth. Many philosophers that defend the identity thesis can agree that the physical truth does determine the whole truth about the world. We are seen as having the capabilities of possessing all the knowledge there is and never leave a mystery unsolved. The world is entirely physical and we are physical beings. Jackson’s argument is seen to have two parts. One part is the fact that our physical knowledge is simply not enough to know everything, or what he calls it as phenomenal knowledge.
