Shiva Avatar refers to the various manifestations of Shiva assumed by him to maintain order in the cosmos. The changing manifestations of Shiva do not stain his purity and unchanging nature since he transcends his own manifestations. Shiva is the transcendental background of this universe.
1. Bhairava – The Frightful
Bhaya stands for fear and the greatest fear of all living creatures is death. Shiva is named Kaal Bhairava because he eliminates the bhaya of kaal which is time that is a devourer of all that is living. Bhairava can be compared to Rudra, the first form mentioned of Shiva in the Rig Veda. Rudra was also associated with the terrifying qualities similar to Bhairava. Lord Bhairav protects, removes all obstacles, cleans the soul with his sheer intensity and makes things favourable. He is one of the most feared deities, but actually, he is one of the most rewarding.
