Malala Yousafzai was born on July, 12, 1997. She was born in Mingora, Pakistan. Mingora is in Swat Valley in northern Pakistan. Her parents are Ziauddin and Toor Peki Yousafzai. She enjoyed reading books and playing outside when she was little. Education was very important to her father and when she was old enough to go to school, she went to the school her dad had started. Swat Valley had always been a good place to live and tourists visited all the time. Malala herself described it as a paradise on Earth. In 2007, that would change forever. That is when the Taliban came to Swat Valley.

It was given by the European Parliament because of her fight for the right to education. She also spoke to the United Nations about how important it was to fight for peace, equality, ending poverty, and human rights, because even though she was just one person, many other people go through the same things she had and it is happening all the time. She said she didn't want revenge on the Taliban and she wasn't against anyone. She just wanted every person to have basic rights including education.
Her book, I Am Malala: The Girl Who Stood Up for Education and Was Shot by the Taliban came out in late 2013. After the attack, she had said, "the terrorists thought that they would change our aims and stop our ambitions, but nothing changed in my life except this: weakness, fear and hopelessness died. Strength, power and courage were born." In December of 2014, she won the Nobel Peace Prize along with, Kailash Satyarthi an Indian activist. At the age of 17, she was and still is today, the youngest person to win the Nobel Peace
