Truman Capote Essay

Truman Streckfus Persons was born September 24, 1924, in New Orleans, LA. Archulus Persons and Lillie May Faulk, divorced when he was 4 years old. While his mother and her second husband, Joseph Garcia Capote, a Cuban-American businessman, lived in New York, he lived with relatives in Monroeville, Alabama (Good). At the time his closest friends were an elderly cousin, Miss Sook Faulk, and Harper Lee, who later went on to write “To Kill A Mockingbird”. Both of the friends appear as characters in Capote’s early fiction. (Truman Capote Biography) Truman’s mom brought him to Manhattan, New York when he was nine years old. While he was there, he adopted the last name “Capote”. Although he had a high IQ (Intelligence Quotient), he did poorly in school. (Truman Capote Biography)

    Harry S Truman was born on May 8, 1884, and was the oldest child of 3. He was born in Lamar, Missouri on a small farm in a room barely big enough for a bed. After 8 months of living in Lamar, the family decided to move to Harrisonville, Missouri. There, his mother gives birth to 2 children, John Vivian Truman in 1886, and Mary Jane Truman in 1889. Truman never attended college, but worked a variety of jobs throughout high school. In 1905, he enrolled into the missouri court guard and served until 1911. He had tried enrolling before, but his poor eyesight prevented him from ever making it, but he secretly memorized the vision test, and made it in. In 1917, he re enrolled into the army and fought in World War I, and he was promoted to captain of Battery D, 129th Field Artillery. On June 28th, Truman resigned from the army and married Bess Wallace, and gave birth to Margaret Truman on February 17, 1924.…

    With attention to diction, Truman Capote exercises this rhetorical device to emphasize the reckless assumptions people may carry when first encountering an unfamiliar character. The way in which an individual may think can be reflected through their choice of speech. For example, “’But a nigger.’ said Perry. That’s different’” is an example of the persona in which Perry may portray himself as (109). The word choice exemplified through Perry’s phrase indicates that the way he talks is reflective in the way he organizes his mind. When one may encounter the phrase said by Perry, it is inevitable that the first impression can lead to the assumption that Perry thinks lowly of the talked about subject.     In Cold Blood written by Truman Capote is novel were most of the readers that read the book, have to think more than enjoy. The novel is about a murder of four members of the Clutter family in Holcomb, Kansas who were murdered by two men, which go by the names of Perry Smith and Dick Hickok. Throughout the novel Capote builds a relationship with one of the murderers, Perry Smith. The way Capote structured his book was that every chapter had a different character point of view, one being the town and the other being the murderers. Capote broke down his novel into 4 parts. The first part talks about the town and the people. The second part talks about the murderers and who they are. The third part talks about the actual murder and what really happened. And then Capote wraps everything up in the last part, which is the part readers find out the real truth behind the murder and the novel itself. The language Capote uses throughout the novel helps the readers realize that you can use imaginative writing with some journalistic reporting, so he wrote a nonfiction book with a little twist. Capote made sure that his readers understood the text and felt the text because he didn’t want them to treat this novel like any ordinary novel. The reason being is because; Capote manipulates reader’s minds by using different point of views, historical, biographical and psychological by utilizing the tone very well.…
