We can see his coward ways when said ”I bolted like a rabbit said Macomber”
He was a coward and could not defend himself also he compares himself to a rabbit . A rabbit is defenseless and this goes more in depth in how he is a coward.
The next example, shows a more in depth way francis is not a man.
This example “woke suddenly, frightened in a dream of the bloody-headed lion standing over him, and listening while his heart pounded, he realized that his wife was not in the other cot in the tent. He lay awake with the knowledge of two hours.” shows.
He is not a man here for he does not stand up and do something when he knows his wife is in the tent with wilson. He lays there for 2 hours letting her cheat on him defensively. Then when she gets back he bartley questions her this shows a lot about his characterization and this gives off a negative vibe of his self confidence.
Later, in the story Macomber has a coming of age
