4-2 Short Paper: Diversity Plan Diversity is something that plagues everyone in their daily lives. We are all given choices almost every day to either do the right thing or the wrong thing. Often times we don’t even realize that we are choosing either, we just go on and let who we are takeover. From the moment we start to socialize we make choices and judgments on who we are, what we like, and what makes us different. The most glaring difference for kids at a young age is skin color and gender. As we age different influences will allow us to either get rid of out biases or to make them stronger. Like the number of players on the football team there are significantly more coaches on staff than there is any other college sport. Majority of the other sports will have 3-4 coaches per team; on a football team you can have up to 12 coaches on staff. It is vitally important that these coaches represent the team and the school and a bright light, any negative aspects of these coaches needs to be addressed. When trying to fix a coach at a school that has some issues fist you would need to look at the coach himself; what are the qualifications is the coach a proven winner, and how does the coach interact with the different race on the team. It’s already been said that there are many more white coaches than African American, while on the flip side there are more African American players than white players. The coach needs to have a personality that translates to young individuals. The coach can’t act in a way the separates the cultural differences of these athletes. The coach needs to act the same with the White players and the African American, treating them both as players trying to win the game. Another aspect of the coach is to make sure that the athletes are getting the best education possible, for what their paying. The coach can see his team G.P.A. at a 2.1, but they have been conference champions. The coach needs to make sure the athletes are getting the most of the college experience.
