POEM ANALYSIS

REASON FOR CHOOSING THIS POEM

I choose this poem ‘if’ by Rudyard Kipling because when I read this poem it reminds me of when I was a little girl how it was difficult to grow up. This poem brings back memories. Back in that time, my family wasn’t a well-to-do family. It makes me remember how hard it is to do things on my own and it took me a very long time to be independent and start to mature. It also make me think how much farther I have to develop in order to completely grow up and reminds me when I was young in life and everything was still new to me. It also reminds me of learning and experiencing new things for the first time yet makes me wonder what the future holds. Some of the situation in this poem somehow related to me. When I read this poem I feel motivated to do things better. There are so many lessons to be learned from this poem.

‘if’
By: Rudyard Kipling
If you can keep your head when all about you Are losing theirs and blaming it on you,
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you But make allowance for their doubting too
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting Or being lied about, don’t deal in lies
Or, being hated, don’t give way to hating And yet don’t look too good, nor talk too wise

If you can dream and not make dreams your master If you can think and not make thought your aim
If you can meet with triumph and disaster And treat those two impostors just the same
If you can bear to hear the truth you’ve spoken Twisted by knaves to make a trap of fools
Or watch the things you gave your life to broken And stoop and build ‘em up with wornout tools

If you can make one heap of all your winnings And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss
And lose, and start again at your beginnings And never breathe a word about your loss
If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew To serve your turn long after they are gone

How to pay college athletes? is another great question. Is there really a plan out there worth taking a look at? Ramogi Huma, president and founder of the National College Players Association developed a three-step plan. The first step of the plan is to give scholarships equal the cost of attending at the college. Most “full scholarships” are still short on average $3,200 of the cost of…

The story “The Lamp at Noon” takes place in a dried up, unfertile desert. Dust storms are causing health problems for the family. The setting is crucial to create the dark and sad atmosphere of the story because it was all about the fact that there is something wrong with the place that it dried out their farm which caused them to suffer. Which also creates a mood of being dull, lonely and monotonous. The couple, Ellen and Paul, has been arguing about what they're going through. Ellen begs her husband to leave the place and stay at the city where they can get more decent clothes and food to eat. But Paul didn't want to leave because he still believes that the soil is still fine for farming, that one day the storm will stop and the sunlight will come back.…

SMARTHINKING's E-structor Response Form (Your marked-up essay is below this form.) HOW THIS WORKS: Your e-structor has written overview comments about your essay in the form below. Your e-structor has also embedded comments [in bold and in brackets] throughout your essay. Thank you for choosing SMARTHINKING's OWL; best wishes with revising your paper! Hi, Gregory! I am Kobe F., and I am happy to read and comment on your work today. I like your choice of Jimmy Cross for your discussion because he suffers the most important conflict between desire and duty in O’Brien’s story. Below I suggest some improvements to your thesis statement, conclusion, and comma use to help you enhance your paper. The ERF and embedded comments include the draft being on topic and grammatically correct as in “Help Requested.” So here we go!  *Strengths of the essay: The strongest point of this draft is that you start the introduction with “What is more important desires or obligations?” as your most important topic-related question that hooks readers to read on. Well done, Gregory! *Gregory 6001059 has requested that you respond to the Main Idea/Thesis: “Jimmy Cross the protagonist in O’Brien’s “The Things They Carried” is pulled astray from his obligations as a leader and protector by his desires for love” identifies your topic and the story as well as its author, but your thesis statement must do more, Gregory. Remember, naming the main topic, defining the purpose of the essay, and indicating the main discussion points to follow are the important tasks of the essay’s thesis that is best given at the end of your introductory paragraph after the essential background details. Look at this model: The central theme of the novel East of Eden by John Steinbeck is that love and hate are closely related (topic), so the qualities of each emotion [core idea 1(love) and 2 (hate)] and the relationship between the two (core idea 3) will be discussed to prove that they are reversible aspects of the…

Irony, satire, parody, humor and epigrams are deeply connected by having one main thing in common: they are usually meant to hurt the intellectual self of someone. We use it in our everyday’s life to make fun of people, or simply because someone is annoying and we would like them to stop, without being “too” rude.…

“Poor people put a low value on themselves and their efforts” (Daymond John). This represents the great work many underprivileged people must go through to earn simple things that would be easy to acquire for people of a wealthy society. People trapped in a lower class have a difficult time attaining happiness. A poor maid’s daughter struggles for a simple friendship and to gain respect from her peers and adults alike, but fails to accomplish this. A bright girl with the highest grades in her school wishes to receive the Scholarship jacket, a token of her hard work in school for eight years, but her social status and wealth conflict with reaching her wish. A woman who marries a poor husband desires the luxury and finery of being wealthy, but she fails to find this wealth and is obliged to find happiness with hard work and struggle. All these people were denied the same rights and opportunities that wealthier people have, making it harder for them to find happiness and reach their goals.…
