Short Story Analysis: Blackberries In June
“Blackberries in June,” that title to me means easy picking, that Jamie and Matt managed to pick all the sweet blackberries from the bush(that’s my opinion of the title). In this short story everyone thinks that Jamie and Matt have it easy and everything has been handed to them. The reason for this is because their going on the course of being successful in life early instead of later in life. Honestly, though they worked hard for everything they have. Both working at minimum wage jobs. Jamie as a waitress and Matt cutting pulpwood, with Jamie’s older brother Charlton. In my opinion Jamie and Matt are determined and disciplined. They have dreams and goal. They also had to sacrifice other things to get the house and pay for the supplies for

As you can see there are many differences in the “Where the Red Fern Grows” book and movie. Note that in the book he has three sisters instead of two unlike the movie and when you look on the cover of the book his dogs where different colors while in the movie there where both red also the book mentions the legend at the beginning instead in the middle of the story. Another difference is that in the book the pickup never shows up at the house but in the movie it does. While I am still talking about differences there were a few scenes were everything was the same. Like how the title is the same also like the cover the boy is blonde and the whole family had a discussion about him having a dog. Mostly things were different than the book like how…

    1. McMillan’s thoughts about the problems with the wages in the produce industry in the “Grapes” chapter were disturbing. She writes, “most of the price tag at the store pays for the system that moves it from place to place-not the wages in the field.” She later goes on to say “So if the farmer is only getting 16 percent of what we pay for food, what share is being paid to me, the worker in the field?” The wages being low for the agriculture industry are shocking to me because as discussed in class, the agriculture industry is needed for human’s wellbeing.…

The combination of diction and imagery used in Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird and “Marigolds” by Eugenia Collier weave a mood of downtrodden hopelessness. Throughout both passages, the authors describe a setting of desolate towns during difficult times, with townsfolk who have forgotten optimism. Such is utilized in To Kill a Mockingbird, as Maycomb is “a tired old town” where “grass gr[ows] on the sidewalks, [and] the courthouse sag[s]”; reading the description evokes an image of a town on the brink of bankruptcy, conveying the despair the inhabitants must feel (Lee). As the diction in the passage is usually equated with the elderly, Lee adds to the picture of a town on its last legs. In contrast, “Marigolds” focuses on the “arid, sterile…

The year 1968 was a year to be remembered: a time of war and a draft, assassinations, and protests and riots about all of the above. Being a sophomore at Columbia University, James Simon Kunen exemplified lots of radical and democratic views both protesting at the university and expressing them in his first book, The Strawberry Statement: Notes of a College Revolutionary written in 1969. With all of the things that Kunen has done with his life, his first book is still perhaps his best and most moving piece.…

“Berries” by Robin Kimmerer is a very detailed and very poetic way of writing. This writing starts with fruit, but the more you read the more meaning you find behind the name of these berries. This writing was a well thought out writing that while you read it all of the words start connecting and it starts making sense but at the beginning you feel like you are reading gibberish. This summary is about the true meaning of the word “Berries” and how you would never know how differently you could look at berries after reading this story. This writing was very interesting to read because it helped me realize the little things in life.…

Matt and Jamie have been planning their life together since high school and set goals for themselves to make their dream happen. Matt reminds Jamie after a disheartening visit to her grandmother’s house that this is what they have always dreamed of. “Some will say we are lucky when you’re working in a dentist’s office and I’m a shift supervisor in a plant, like we hadn’t been planning that very life since we were juniors in high school” (Rash 243). They have been making the necessary sacrifices to help them get that much closer to achieving their goals, as Matt points out in the conversation they are having on the drive home. “They’ll forget how we worked near full-time jobs in high school and saved that money when they wasted theirs on new trucks and fancy clothes” (Rash 243). The willingness to give up some luxuries in life to keep their priorities straight shows how committed Matt and Jamie are to their future. Even if it is at an inconvenience to others, as her mother clearly states when they get to the family dinner. “I know you all are trying to save money, but I wish you had a phone” (Rash 239). The young couple has put their immediate desires on hold so they can achieve the big picture they have dreamed of, planned for, and worked hard to…
