Over many a quaint and curious volume of forgotten lore,

"'Tis some visitor," I muttered, "tapping at my chamber door- Only this, and nothing more." This is my favorite peace of poetry by the magnificent Edgar Allan Poe. The piece is from the well known story called “The Raven.” I think Edgar Allan Poe is worthy of a portrait because he was a very well known poet and short story writer. His parents got a divorce when he was 1year old. Soon after his mother died and he was adopted by Mr. and Mrs. John Allan at the age of 2. At the age of three the war of 1812 begins. He was only 7 when the year without a summer begun. At 18 years old he printed his first book “Tamerlane” but he could not support himself any longer so he decided to join the US army. One year later he was doing very well in the army and attains rank of Sergeant Major. When Edgar was 23 he submitted a number of short stories to the magazines but all of them get rejected. When Edgar sent a desperate letter to John Allan in need of help Edgar was ignored. A year later, John Allan dies and leaves Edgar nothing in his will. He decided to enter a contest for poems and won it with “The Manuscript Found in a Bottle.” Later because of the contest he got a job and marries his cousin Virginia when she was 13 and he was 27. His life was filled with intense drinking periods giving him a bad reputation in the 19th century which is believed to be because of the death of Virginia Poe by tuberculosis. However he was able to write wonderful short stories such as "Murders in the Rue Morgue" and "The Gold Bug", which brought him fame in Europe.
