The outbreak of World War I happened over 100 years ago, and we have fairly accurate idea of what happened between 1914 and 1918 as there are records and written work telling us how the war went along. However, war is more than just a record; there were all kinds of drama and stories from each individual. The story and controversy of Billy Bishop involves different interpretation and view of remaining evidence. But the thing is, we will never know every detail of those stories by looking at records. No matter how detailed the records are, there were too many variables that could’ve affected one’s decision in war.…

In the short story “A&P,” John Updike writes of a nineteen year old boy, Sammy, who is overcome by his fantasies when three girls walk into the A&P grocery store. They are in nothing but bathing suits. He soon decides, after the events that occur, because of these three girls, to quit working in the third slot of the grocery store. The three girls to Sammy are damsels in distress, because of Lengel, the manager. Out of the three girls, one catches his eye, the one he calls “Queenie” (Updike 85). She soon becomes the center of his focus, from the details of her swimsuit to the color of her hair. He and his coworkers cannot seem to take their eyes off these girls throughout the entire store. This all changes when the girls go to the meat counter, where they meet McMahon. He is much older in age and the way he lusts after these young girls makes Sammy uneasy. Sammy, seeing the older man “slavering” over the girls, shows him that he does not want to be ‘that guy’. He shifts his feelings from corrupt to protective. He goes into more of a heroic mode so to speak. This is in his mind is what made him decide to quit his job, but why? After seeing the actions of McMahon, Sammy is shocked knowing he also was acting the same way. It brought to his attention how his actions cause an effect in many ways. When he quit he must explain his actions to his family, accepting responsibility for what he has done. Sammy must also decide how he wishes to perceive and interact with women in the future. In this story, Sammy goes from being an immature boy to a more mature man.…

A shrill trumpet call had pierced the air. It was the bulletin. Victory. It always meant victory when a trumpet call preceded the news. He could hear just enough of what was issuing from the telescreen to realize that it had happened as he had foreseen. A vast seaborne armada secretly assembled. A sudden blow in the enemy’s rear. The white arrow tearing across the tail of the black. Under the table Winston’s feet made convulsive movements. He had not stirred from his seat, but in his mind he was running, swiftly running. He looked up again at the portrait of Big Brother. The colossus that bestrode the world. The rock against which the hordes of Asia dashed themselves in vain. Much had changed in him since that first day in the Ministry of Love,…

My hospital bed was ice cold and the bleak and empty white walls depressed me as the uncomforting thought that I would have to stay here for maybe another week brought tears to my eyes. The usual and oppressive smell of disinfectant lingered in the room as I recalled that night in my head, trying to convince myself it wasn’t my fault, as I had done everyday since the accident. It was the day everything changed and my life was turned upside down. Forever.…

The poem begins with a description of a scene familiar to many, "an ant on a tablecloth…" Then the ant bumps into a day drowsy moth that is much larger than him. The ant seems a tad bit jealous that the moth lacks the amount of responsibility that ants are burdened with. The ant thinks that if the moth were one of his own race he'd chastise him and send him back to work. He describes how the ant society is much more sophisticated and intellectual than the likes of the moth. Their philosophy is to learn about religion, nature, and space. The ant then being concerned with his own duties hurries back to his own job. The ant subsequently runs into another ant carrying "the body of one of their dead." The poem goes on to describe the ants' treatment and procedures of the dead. The ants are not taken aback by the death "… isn't even given a moment's arrest, seems not even impressed." However, word of the deceased is passed along among the ants, "death has come to Jerry McCormick." They reflect briefly on the life of Jerry, mentioning that he was a "selfless forager." The dutiful priorities of the ants then kick in when they put out the call for a worker to attend to the body. Then the poem goes on to describe the burial process of the ant. Laying the body on a flower, wrapping him in a petal, and embalming him with the blood of the gods. These orders had been handed down from the Queen. The "mortician" ant arrives to carry away Jerry, and no one "stands around to stare" because it is not their business to. This type of thing happens every day in the ant world, so there is no use in dwelling or wasting time mourning one of their own. The poem ends by saying…

A short story concentrates on creating a single dynamic effect and is limited in character and situation. It is a language of maximum yet economical effect. Every word must do a job, sometimes several jobs. Short stories are filled with numerous language and sound devices. These language and sound devices create a stronger image of the scenario or the characters within the text, which contribute to the overall pre-designed effect. As it is shown in the metaphor 'lipstick bleeding gently' in Cinnamon Toast. This describes how the lipstick on a woman's faces is travelling from the lips into the skins around the mouth. The author has chosen this metaphor because it contributes to the reader gaining a stronger image of the characters that they may wear too much makeup and try too hard sociably. It also shows that they are older (i.e. l…

A short story is a brief work of literature, usually written in narrative prose.[1] Emerging from earlier oral storytelling traditions in the 17th century, the short story has grown to encompass a body of work so diverse as to defy easy characterization. At its most prototypical the short story features a small cast of named characters, and focuses on a self-contained incident with the intent of evoking a "single effect" or mood.[2] In so doing, short stories make use of plot, resonance, and other dynamic components to a far greater degree than is typical of an anecdote, yet to a far lesser degree than a novel. While the short story is largely distinct from the novel, authors of both generally draw from a common pool of literary techniques.…
