Short Story: East Glacier Falls Summer Camps
“Yes mom, I know where to go”, Simon sputtered as he hung up and drove himself along with his little sister, Lydia, to East Glacier Falls summer camp. Their mom had seen an advertisement in the paper a few months back about after school recreational activities boosted cognitive power and improved test scores, but he thought that was made up by summer camps to get concerned parents to spend excessive amounts of money. As he pulled up and started to unload the luggage from the trunk he noticed a girl around his age limp over to the car and greet his sister. Walking over, he politely greets the girl and she introduces herself as Carmen. The children socialize briefly before the camp counselor hurried them to the mess hall. Once all the young campers

Charlotte Johnston been sitting at a black top table surrounded by a group of chatty students her own age. And hadn't been paying much attention to what the teacher was saying, because everything zoned out, besides appearances and movements. Mr. Hube was wearing a bright purple sweater with tan khakis, and was extra fidgety. Something got him all hot and bothered, and it was obvious. His pale blue eyes glanced the room, and the pauses, he worried his lower lip, driving Charlotte crazy, that his outfit choice was bold for a teacher and that he appeared nervous to speak in front of his own class.…

On an early weekday morning after Christmas, many inches of new snow had fallen. Seven-year old Annie Dillard met the boys’ ages eight, nine, and ten in front of her house on Lloyd Street, where they had snow nearly to the top of their boots. The two oldest boys were Mikey and Peter Fahey who lived near Dillard on Llyod Street. The tough kid Chickie Mc Bride was there and Billy, Paul, and Mackie Kean too from across Reynolds Street were the boys grew up. The group of kids wandered around their neighborhood looking for action, when they had found it on Reynolds Street. It was a chilly day that wintery morning with clouds afloat in the sky. As the cars drove down Reynolds Street, you could hear them coming from afar, by the clanking of the chains on their tires. As the cars drove past, the chains on the tires left different grove patterns through the fresh snow. Dillard and the boys began making perfectly shaped…

You really don’t know who we are?” Jason shrugged helplessly. “It’s worse than that. I don’t know who I am.” The bus dropped them in front of a big red stucco complex like a museum, just sitting in the middle of nowhere. Maybe that’s what it was: the National Museum of Nowhere, Jason thought. A cold wind blew across the desert. Jason hadn’t paid much attention to what he was wearing, but it wasn’t nearly warm enough: jeans and sneakers, a purple T-shirt, and a thin black windbreaker. “So, a crash course for the amnesiac,” Leo said, in a helpful tone that made Jason think this was not going to be helpful. “We go to the ‘Wilderness School’”—Leo made air quotes with his fingers. “Which means we’re ‘bad kids.’ Your family, or the court, or whoever, decided you were too much trouble, so they shipped you off to this lovely prison—sorry, ‘boarding school’—in Armpit, Nevada, where you learn valuable nature skills like running ten miles a day through the cacti and weaving daisies into hats! And for a special treat we go on ‘educational’ field trips with Coach Hedge, who keeps order with a baseball bat. Is it all coming back to you now?” “No.” Jason glanced apprehensively at the other kids: maybe twenty guys, half that many girls. None of them looked like hardened criminals, but he wondered what they’d all done to get sentenced to a school for delinquents, and he wondered why he belonged with them. Leo rolled his eyes. “You’re really gonna play this out,…

However, shown by the calculated plan to erase the mean-spirited comments recorded by Jennifer Kahn when visiting Michael at his house, these actions are simply a way to get by until the next vicious act. The other children at the “summer camp” show similar behaviors; L takes her seat after chasing a boy around the room as soon as she is asked, only to do it again when the right opportunity strikes; Michael sees a toy in his younger brothers mouth and does nothing at first, only to turn and yank at the toy, knocking his brother over, when least suspected (Kahn). These seemingly virtuous acts are not in fact virtuous, because they are not being done because it is the right thing to do; because they know it is virtuous; because they consistently do virtuous deeds; because they have controls over their desires; or because they take pleasure in performing virtuous…

Camp Harmony is an inappropriate name for the Japanese internment camp for many reasons. The camp was not a place of happiness and the people were not treated with respect. The United States put Japanese people in a camp after pearl harbor because they were scared that all Japanese were bad and wanted us gone. In the story "Camp Harmony" by Monica Sone, is about a story of a family going into Camp Harmony and their experiences in the camp. In the story, the child narrating the story says, "The wire fence was real. I no longer had the right to walk out of it. It was because I had Japanese ancestors. It was also because some people had little faith in the ideas and ideals of democracy." This means that the people in the camp were locked up and…

The most important thing this book showed me that even though these children have disabilities they don’t let that stop them from being like any other child. These kids have so much motivation to do the camp activities even though it would be difficult for them due to their handicap. Even though Spider had no arms or legs, he is an incredible swimmer. Jones’ Acorn People showed him that they are capable of accomplishing much more than anyone, including himself, thought they ever could.…

Chapter 2 #1 Scouts three mistakes on her first day of school were first, when Miss Caroline, the teacher asked her if she knew what the alphabet was, she read the letters and everything else she asked her to read. Then Miss Caroline caught scout writing a letter to her friend. These things frustrated Miss Caroline because she was the one that was supposed to teach the children to read and write in her own way. Her third mistake was when scout tried to explain to the teacher why Walter Cunningham had no lunch. She said “you’re shamin’ him, Miss Caroline”, and this probably embarrassed her.…

“A simple life is good for me. I don’t need a whole lot. For me, a T-shirt, a pair of shorts, barefoot on a beach, and I’m happy, “ once stated musician, Yanni. We reviewed the day’s plan as I helped him clean up. While cleaning around the room I noticed how colorful the room was. There were: banners of letters and numbers hanging on the wall, as well as a large alphabet carpet on the floor for the kids to sit on, toys to play with and books to read. As the children arrived, they removed their belongings and placed them in the cubbies. Afterwards, they grabbed their name tags and set their lunchboxes on the lunchbox table.
