Should cell phones be allowed in school rough draft
Danielle Oliva- Callejas Due: October 6, 2014
Mrs.Marlow/ Period 1 Rough Draft
Speech
Good morning! I’ll be as realistic as possible with you in regards to my relationship with my phone. When I leave my phone at home, I feel like I left my whole life at home. How many of you feel the same way? I think phones should be allowed in school. I feel phones are an important part of daily lives since they came out. I use my phone everyday whether it’s to send a text, play a game, or listen to music. I think we should be the generation that puts an end to phones not allowed in class. Phones are the present and it will be used in the future until something better comes along. In school, there is always that one annoying rule, no phones allowed in class! Students are able to take risks by bringing their phones to school. “65% of cell-owning teens at schools that completely ban phones bring their phones to school every day”(Boyd) Is that really the responsibility of the teacher to be telling you to put your phone away? If you miss something its not on the teacher. You can’t ask your teacher later because again, it’s not the teacher’s fault. I know teachers get paid to teach but the student is also required to put effort into his/her education. They are your grades and your future so it should be your decision to use your phone in class. In case of an emergency, you have your phone handy. Lets say that the school is under attack. Thanks to phones, many students were allowed to contact their parents and loved ones on the attack of 9/11. Some people don’t even bring their phones to class to avoid getting in trouble. I think that should change. In many schools there is not enough computers for every student. Cell phones can be used as a tool rather than something that is prohibited. If students have their cell phones, they

The second reason that students shouldn't be allowed to use cell phones in school for education is for the sake of the teachers, a teacher should not have to fight for the attention of his or her students due to technology. After twenty years of teaching history and ESL for Lowell High School, Miriam Morgenstern is quitting her job for multiple reasons. One of Morgenstern’s reasons for quitting is her students and their cell phones, she explains her frustration, “The texting, tweeting, and snapchatting during class time are ‘an incredible distraction, and makes it much more difficult to teach,’ she said. ‘It’s pretty hard to compete with a very funny YouTube video.’” It is unacceptable that students are using their phones while the teacher…

According to the YouTube video "Cell Phones in School", it states how having internet at the fingertips of students, it can bring the curriculum further and more in depth than the textbooks allow. Having the curriculum at a student's fingertips, adds so much more than the textbook could possibly provide the student with. Moreover, adding to the student's overall understanding and insight on the lesson could lead to better test scores and overall grades. So if the use of cell phones could possibly help a student excel in the classroom, the cell phones policy should be reevaluated to better the school. Since the internet is at the student's fingertips, it can help a struggling student better understand the material, allowing them to excel in class. The video also states how students are able exchange and share information faster. The use of the internet too, will lower the needs for computers. The diminishing use of computers will also the school to save money in that department and apply it somewhere else. In addition, phones allow for many other uses, besides the internet. There is more than one side to the debate about cell phone availability during school. One claim is that students should be allowed to have their phones on them and use their cell phones during appropriate times. In the article, the authors provide details about how there are numerous reasons why cell phones should be allowed during school. Students should be allowed access to cell phones, because if they are responsible enough to be going off to college in a year or so, they should be responsible enough to have a cell phone on them and use it wisely (George and Cook). Another reason why cell phones should be allowed in school is because otherwise it can create a divide between the students and the teachers. Students are so invested in their phones, so if a teacher…

One reason why teachers and administrators ban the use of phones is because they believe that students wouldn’t pay attention and wouuldn’t be able to learn what they’re talking about. I disagree with this because mostly everyone at Jenks secretly checks their phones in every class. Even people making straight A’s in AP classes check them.…

Cell Phones shouldn't be aloud in schools because of all the bullying and harassment that goes on in the classroom. They could use their cellular devices for cheating on worksheets, quizzes, and tests. Students can take pictures of other students without their permission and post them on social media accounts like Snapchat, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, YouTube, etc. But Cell Phones should be aloud in school because they can take their homework home and be able to find their assignments easier. They should also be allowed in schools because it is easier for the students to follow along in reading and watching videos.…

I strongly agree that cell phones should be allowed on school grounds. I have two reasons to support my opinion. First having cell phones can be a helpful learning tool to teachers. Max Gold supported my opinion. He stated “By using texting as a positive tool instead of a means of distraction educators can now have student’s text in the answers that the students have questions on. Also Greenberg High School stated “The Students who have a smart phone can use various applications that are designed to assist in learning and designed just for students. Many of these smart phones have programs that are similar to what is found in a laptop or desktop computer. Being able to quickly look up facts on the internet is possible on many phones. If a student needs assistance with class work and does not have access to a computer, a smart phone can be used in a snap. Also most private schools allow cell phones. In private schools the prevailing view is that cell phones are here to stay. They are an essential line of communication between frantically busy parents and their children. As a result, most private schools allow cell phones on their premises with the understanding that phones must be turned off during class and only used under certain conditions and in specified places. Most schools have very specific guidelines written into their handbooks and acceptable use policy manuals. All students agree to abide by those rules both while on the school premises and also while under the school's jurisdiction when off campus. second opinion is parents can keep in contact with their children. Maya Cohen supported this reason by stating that “Cell phones create a convenience that was previously unavailable. With cell phones, you…

Also, students also need cell phones just in case of an emergency. If there was a tornado or earthquake, how would the parent/guardian know if the student was alright. Also, if there was an intruder, the student could call 911 to alert the authorities. It’s no doubt the school systems are taking precautions about these unexpected events but just to be safe, we should allow cell phones in school. It’s very important that we redact these rules.…

Another reason cell phones should be allowed in school is because students are old enough to know what can be done and what cannot be done. In support of this, students aren’t happy about the fact that only teachers have the privilege of bringing cell phones to school. They feel that they are not being trusted and treated equally by the…

Philosophy has evolved quite a bit since its emergence in ancient Greece; one of the biggest developments has been conscious and what really explains our minds. It’s commonly argued that our minds and our ability for deep thought is what truly separates us from everything around us, so what cause is this? What makes us different? There have been theories developed on this idea throughout history from Descartes’s dualism to the common modern day theories of materialism, but even to this day there is the ongoing debate of which theory is right. Searle has a unique view called non-reductive materialism which challenges the premise of all other theories.…

Another reason cell phones should not be banned in classrooms is because students can use them as a reminder or planner. Generally, cell phones have a calendar built in the device. In my biology class, I have a unit 5 test, unit portfolio assessment and a lab report due all on different days; I used my calendar app in my cell phone to be a reminder. Therefore, cell phones can remind me that I have assignments and tests coming up. This shows that a cell phone can benefit students in the classrooms.…

Phones shouldn’t be permitted at school because they can be a big distraction to learning. Most teachers approve of my outlook on cellphones. Texting during instruction can hurt your grades. Grades on report cards are stumpy due to cell phones. The purpose is because many students don’t participate in instruction instead they are texting, or on the web. Reason 1 Paragraph-Distractions are a teachers worst nightmare, and so phones being added to the classes would be a big distraction. One reason phones should not be added to the class is in the article “Cell Phones in Classrooms? No! Students Need to Pay Attention,” it states they could be used inappropriately. This shows that cell phones can be a distraction because most fifth graders have some type of social media, so how do we know they aren't snapchatting their friends or posting funny photos of their teacher?
