First, teen obesity has lowered because of sports, for example, more than a third of adults in America are classed as obese,(Adult Obesity Facts). which is where sports need to come into play decreasing these statistics. This shows, that America's obesity statistics are the highest in the world currently this is why children should participate in sports to lower these statistics. Additionally, Keith M. Drake, a postdoctoral researcher in the Geisel School of Medicine in Dartmouth says “I think being a part of some kind of team or organization gives children the …show more content…
opportunity to have moderate to vigorous activity consistently,”(O’Connor). This explains, that if someone were to train on a regular basis that they will become more in shape, and become a lot healthier.
Secondly, teamwork is a big part in a sport which helps the children learn better social, and communication skills. Queen's University researcher Jean Cote said “There’s a lot more to sport than the idea of winning, and losing, and developing physical skills. Under the right conditions, youth sport can help children develop transferable, personal, and social skills – citizenship qualities that they’ll retain throughout their lives,”(Vieru). Furthermore, sports also help children cope with losing, even more, that it teaches children to use teamwork to help each other out. Also, Elizabeth Jackson an assistant professor of medicine says “We looked at reports of activity, and participation in team sports, where leadership, and empathy skills are frequently developed,”(Grohol). This illustrates, that children who grow playing sports are more likely to grow leadership skills easier than others who don’t play a sport which could help with school projects.
Finally, sports help children increase their Grade Point Averages and class attendances, Eric Sondheimer, the reporter for this study said “According to the study, the 35,000 student athletes in LAUSD attended an average of 21 more days of school per year than their counterparts, while they also sported GPAs some 0.55 to 0.74 points higher than non-athletes,”(Scott).
This shows, that children who play a sport can become a lot more productive and even more focused in school than children who do not play a sport. Furthermore, Stephen Baddeley, director of sports at the University of Bath said “Their weeks are very pressurised, so top sports people are extremely organized, disciplined, and efficient with their time, which are useful skills in the academic side of their lives,”(Gil). This suggests, that a child who plays a sport can be more organized, and ready to go for a school day. While others may struggle with staying out of trouble it is relatively easy for a child who plays a sport.
In conclusion, this is why children should play a sport because it has so many positive effects on the brain and body. These examples are just some of the ways America can become more fit, become a leader, and also doing better in
school.
