Music has always been an important part of our society. From the concert halls of the nineteenth century, technology has brought music to the ear-buds of the twenty-first century. Along with this technology however, comes the degradation of the music itself. More and more secular music are coming out with the theme of sex, drugs, violence and rebellion. These kinds of songs are so pervasive among young people that they considered these sins to be acceptable. Should Christians then listen to secular music? Have you ever thought of the effects it would have with your relationship with God? Do you think God will be glorified?
An article from The New Yorker Magazine in April of 2006 quotes, “The human response to music is powerful and involuntary” (Schmidt, 2007, pg. 38). How many times as you listen to a song, that you subconsciously tap your hands or feet with the rhythm? Countless times right? Without even thinking about it, you just start doing it by going with the flow of the beat. Remember Michael Jackson’s famous sexual hand gesture whenever he sings and dance, in where he put his hand in front of him. When he was asked why does he do it while singing on stage, his reply was “It’s the music that COMPELS me to do it. You don’t think about it, it just happens. I”M A SLAVE TO THE RYTHYM.” (The Evening Star, Feb. 11, 1993) See what secular music can do to a person? How much more if a Christian listens to them? A Christian can be affected by it without even making any conscious decisions. Satan wants to subvert truth through your mind to lure you away from God. He will make a deceitful move on you and tell you that it’s okay to listen to secular music and you would not even notice it will have on you.
Have you ever thought of the lyrics that most secular music contains? The Bible says on Philippians 4:8 “Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just,
