First of all, what is a drug? A drug can be medicine, narcotic or other substance that when ingested into the body affects his/her mood or behavior. some drugs are mild like sugar or tobacco, others can be less mild like some like over the counter medicine or most common prescription medications. The worst is illegal drugs.
Not to long ago American Police used to just throw drug addicts into jail without any treatment , not caring that the addicts might had a family, or that maybe they were tricked into taking the drug(s), or maybe it was peer pressure. Lucky for those addicts, a lot of people are now protesting and saying that along with the punishment they should get treated and partially its not the addicts fault that they are addicted. So as a result of those protests now many drug addicts are being treated, but not all. There is still is the question, should drug addiction be considered like a disease and treated with medical treatment or like a psychological problem and be treated with therapists?'.
Still very often addiction is untreated in any way. According to SAMHSA's National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH), 23.2 million persons (9.4 percent of the U.S. population) age s 12 or older needed treatment for a drug or alcohol addiction problem in 2007. Of these people, 2.4 million (10.4 percent of those who needed treatment) received treatment at a specialty facility ( ex: hospital, drug or alcohol rehabilitation or mental health center). So as a result, 20.8 million people (8.4 percent of the population aged 12 or older) needed treatment for any drug or alcohol use problem but did not receive it. These estimates are very close to the older ones.
According to the National Institute of Drug Abuse, medication and behavioral therapy, especially when
