GMO Foods Should be Labeled
According to Down To Earth “One of the most dangerous and least understood experiments with human health the world has ever known is currently underway without your consent—in your household and households across the nation, indeed throughout our entire planet. It is the wholesale contamination of the world's food supply with genetically modified organisms (GMOs)”. According to Non-GMO Project “GMOs or Genetically modified organisms, are living organisms whose genetic material has been artificially manipulated in a laboratory through genetic engineering. This creates combinations of plant, animal, bacteria, and virus genes that do not occur in nature or through traditional crossbreeding methods.” GMO crops should be labeled because People have a right to know what their buying, and it’s not know yet if it is safe.

Some of the large companies that we buy from might not want you to know what is in their products. Some of these companies are Pepsi, Hines, and others. The reason they don’t put the GMOs on their products are because they don’t want to lose business, and money. But, because it has not yet been determined if GMOs are safe or not they should label genetically modified foods. According to Down To Earth “Specific engineered organisms may be harmful by the novel gene combinations they possess. No one knows with certainty how these new life forms will behave in the future, so the limited risk assessments conducted to date are poor predictors of the safety of GMOs over the long term.” Because People have a right to know what their buying, and it’s not know yet if it is safe, GMO crops should be labeled. They should be labeled, so that we know what foods are safe for us. According to Down to Earth “As of 2011, 88% of U.S. corn is genetically engineered as are 94% of soy, 95% of sugar beets, 90% of canola oil, 90% of cotton, and about 80% of Hawaiian papaya.”

    Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO)/Genetically Engineered (GE) foods are the result of laboratory processes which artificially insert genes into the deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) of food crops or animals. There are many arguments both in favor of and against mandatory labeling of GMO/GE foods. Whether or not to require labeling of GMOs or GE foods also involves the debate over the risks and benefits of food crops produced using biotechnology. However, the overarching argument is consumers have a right to know what is in their food, especially concerning products that can cause allergic reactions. According to the Campaign for Healthier Eating in America, Genetically Modified (GM) foods are linked to toxic and allergic reactions, sick, sterile, and dead livestock, and damage to virtually every organ studied in lab animals (http://www.responsibletechnology.org). Because there is no scientific evidence that GMO/GE foods do or do not cause health issues in humans (because there have been no long-term studies), consumers may or may not be being harmed by GMOs. However, the safety of GMOs has been questioned by other countries. In fact, they are banned by food manufacturers in Europe and other countries, but, present in the majority of meats, produce, diary and processed foods in the United States (US). Many consumers in the US have no knowledge that they are consuming GMOs. If they did, it is now known if, similar to Europe, many would prefer to not consume GMO/GE foods. In chemistry, there are hundreds of thousands of compounds such as proteins and amino acids, and every single compound has a very specific blueprint of molecules laid out to plug into the human body in specific ways. When this exact blueprint is not followed, it can lead to failure of proper digestion and absorption of these nutrients. A GMO can have a replica blueprint but if the nutrient is off by a single bond, it can mimic its original molecules structure but have the inability to properly plug into the digestive systems.
