Should Guns Be Allowed On College Campuses
Would faculty and students benefit from a concealed weapon permit holder to carry on college campuses? Guns should be permitted on college campuses because schools are gun free zones, making them vulnerable for the opportunity of crime to occur. One reason why guns should be allowed on college campuses is because time is of the essence with a split second to make a life changing decision. Another reason why weapons should be authorized on school grounds is because, it can assist with detaining an active shooter before law enforcement arrives on the scene. Timing is important when dealing with an armed gunman, as a victim you should be able to exercise your right to protect yourself and others. In fact, a poll was taken by PoliceOne, asking
450,000 active and retired law enforcement members, “What would help most in preventing large scale shootings in public?” Their top response was, “More permissive concealed carry policies for civilians.” (McCuistion, 2016) By allowing students and faculty to carry on campus it would help to detain an active shooter prior to the arrival of law enforcement. It could also deter the intentions of an individual willing to harm others when being challenged by a person who is lawfully carrying a weapon. Author Dennis McCuiston stated, “He has held a concealed handgun license for a number of years, explains that potential shooters will avoid attacking places where others may be armed.” Some people may agree that, “Keeping guns out, not allowing more in, is the answer, critics of the bills say.”(Lacey, 2011) Many also believe “...
