TOPIC: INSTANT REPLAYS IN SOCCER: SHOULD THE USE OF INSTANT REPLAY BE INTRODUCED TO CURB CHEATING IN THE GAME?
My stand: institute instant replays for soccer! Because— 1. It will reign in misbehavior by fans that are upset by wrong calls made in a game. 2. It would bring integrity to the game by clarifying if a goal is a goal. 3. It would bring clarity to a player’s behavior.
The use of instant replay in sports has been a hot topic for at least the last decade here at home and abroad. Cheating has been mostly prevalent in soccer in comparison to other major sports, like football and basketball. For example, while I watched the 2006 Champion League Final between Arsenal Football Club of England and “Futbol Club Barcelona” of Spain, the Arsenal goalkeeper (Jens Lehmann) was sent of the pitch for fouling a Barcelona player (Samuel Etoo) at the 19th minute, hence it became a game of 11 men against 10 men for the remaining 71 minutes. Replays showed that Etoo had deliberately fallen over after a minimal contact with Lehmann; he had cheated Arsenal and deceived the referee into sending an opposing player off the pitch.
