Over the past decades, the National Water Commission have been providing Jamaicans with water, but , is their service efficient? Water privatization refers to the provision of water service and sanitization by the private sector. More and more countries worldwide have taken the initiative to privatize their water system. Whether or not Jamaica’s water supply should be privatized is an ongoing debate among Jamaicans. Some Jamaicans believe that the water system should not be privatized because the current public water system, the NWC, has as much competence as the privatized system would. Mainly because private companies are driven by profit incentives so they are more likely to cut cost and be more efficient (Jain, Ohri ,and Khanna,2008). By cutting cost will definitely increase their customer numbers hence increasing the probability of gaining more profit. In addition, since they are profit driven they will pay greater attention to customer satisfaction and in return provide efficient water supply. Privatization also leads to increased competition which drives quality improvement and better new innovations (Marcelin and Mathur, 2015). If the Jamaica’s water supply is privatized, it will drive the need for other companies to start distributing water to citizens. With these companies competing to gain more customers/ consumers, they will not only create new innovations but most importantly improve their quality. According to an article published in the Gleaner entitled “NWC should not be privatized says acting president “, Mark Barnett, the acting president of NWC said that if the NWC was to become a private entity, the NWC would not automatically lead to reduced operating cost. He believes that energy cost in Jamaica is too high to reach such drastic goals. Barnett continued to highlight that the National Water Commission is doing what private entities would do by tackling the inefficiencies. (Johnson,2015).
