“According to the Pediatrics journal “The Crucial Role of Recess in School,” “children develop intellectual constructs and cognitive understanding through interactive, manipulative experiences” (Murray and Ramstetter 183). In other words, children experience and learn various cognitive skills that are not learned in a classroom, but during unstructured play at recess. If one were to study elementary students throughout the school day, he/she would notice that the children become inattentive and restless after sitting at a desk for a period of time. Recess gives children the time that they need to release energy to be able to come back to class more concentrated and productive. When recess is eliminated from elementary schools, these cognitive benefits and skills are lost. Even with more instructional time, most of it would be lost trying to get the children to pay attention throughout an entire school day. Along with cognitive benefits come social and emotional benefits. “Recess promotes social and emotional learning and development for children by offering them time to engage in peer interactions…” (Murray and Ramstetter 184). While interacting with other children at recess, students learn communication skills that they wouldn’t learn sitting in a classroom or at home. Some skills include cooperation, sharing, problem solving, and self-control. All of these skills are used throughout the rest of a child’s life and are vital to learn in order to be successful in the classroom as well as in future activities. Making the decision to ban recess strips children of the opportunity to learn and practice these traits. Not only are emotional, cognitive, and social opportunities taken away, but physical ones are as well. Many people in society today complain and argue about how obesity has taken over the country, and that children need to become more active.…

In first grade, I went to Brown Elementary. At recess I would always go on the bubble. The bubble was a dome shaped climbing structure with hexagons to make up the bubble. The bubble had been there for many years before, so the gray is hardly not there anymore it’s more of a little gray and a lot of the rusty red color. I would always climb on the bubble at recess.…

With all the work kids forget about outside and will get caught up in a hot new game or product. With recess not being provided students should get the option to play a sport or do gym all school year. Some middle schools should invest their time in making a new schedule. The schedule should start school a little bit earlier so there is time to fit in a gym class (“Pros and cons of middle school sports”). If a school does not have year round gym classes or recess students might not have anything else to do besides homework.…

Schools should ban tag and other playground games. Banning tag is a good idea because it will limit the amount of injuries. When kids play tag, sometimes it can get a little too rough and lead to them getting hurt. When we ban tag, we eliminate the amount of kids that go home with injuries. To add on, banning tag and other playground games will also limit the amount of bullying.Sometimes kids are repeatedly targeted by bullies. When we take tag away, we prevent this situation from even starting. This will make sure kids feelings won't get hurt. One time my son came home crying because kids kept singling him out in tag. Taking away tag will also prevent lawsuits against schools. When kids get hurt some parents will sue the schools. This means the schools have to pay a lot of money to the parents because their kids got hurt. When we take away tag, this insures that the parents will now have little to no reason to sue the schools.…

If you let them have recess that is what they will be waiting for just like how we wait for the end of the day so that we could go home or when we wait for lunch. These articles were very interesting and different from most of the academic articles that I have read. The second article “Increasing Physical Activity Through Recess” was unique and made me think a lot about my own personal experiences. I found that most of the ideas were very innovative. The one concept that I found I think would have the greatest positive impact on the students was talking about “training recess supervisors to teach new games.” This idea seems like it would be so much fun for not only the kids but the recess supervisors as well. I do think that this idea can be improved upon though. As most of us know recces is not only the only break that the students get but the only break that most of the teachers get as well. In most…

One reason I think this is that kids go to bed late staying up doing homework or getting back from school events. Kids in our school district are so involved with extra circular activities, which I think is a good thing. We want our kids to be involved, but we also want them to be successful with their school work. My daughter Mariah told me the other night after her far away basketball game…
