Should Parents Pull High School Students Go To College?
For many years I have heard people say passion beats talent any day. To clarify, if you have a strong desire to succeed in something you can achieve your dreams regardless of anything else. For example, some teachers and parents believe that without college you cannot be successful. However, we are all different and each of us has our own individual goals in life. For some the goal might be a college degree, while for others it may not be. Therefore, parents and teachers should not push high school graduates towards college, instead it should be their own decision. My brother has always struggled in school, and never had the interest in going to college. His true passion is the outdoors. Every since he was big enough, he went with my dad farming, or hunting. His goal in life is to follow in my dad's footsteps, and be a farmer. He can still be successful without a college degree, and love what he is doing …show more content…
The Edition trust released a study on transcripts of high school graduates of 2013. In this study they found that while students may be graduating, only a small part of those are actually prepared for the next step. It showed that only 8 percent have taken courses to better prepare themselves for college, and to be “college ready”. Teachers are pushing students that may not even be ready, to go to college. Steve Jobs once said, “Your work is going to fulfill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven’t found it yet, keep looking and don't settle.” We all have different dreams, and goals in life. Teachers and parents do not need to push students towards college. It should be the high school graduates decisions. College doesn't have to be for everyone, but everyone deserves to find that great work regardless of what it takes to get

Now, many might argue that college is the only way to secure a good job position and the only reason to get a degree. Jeffrey Selingo, a professor at the University of Arizona and the former editor of the Chronicle of Higher Education, writes that students and their parents prefer to obtain a bachelor's degree designated to a specific area; for example, the most popular today is business. That is why “students and their families, faced with big tuition bills, want to be sure to pick a major that leads to a job after graduation. ” (Selingo) That is to say, parents and students are worried that their investment in education can be wasted and hope to get a return in the future.…

This brings up the question as to why many people would so plan to go to college. This is also answered by the Survey data retrieved by the federal Department of Education. It is stated, “some of these students may aspire to college in the same way that many of us aspire to exercise: it is something they would like to have done but not something they would like to do.” In simpler terms, they would like to receive the benefits without doing the work. This solves the reason as to why so many high school students plan to go to college. Having a degree is an excellent key to the workforce, but the process of achieving it is very tedious. In Zinsser’s articles he talks about how students feel obligated to live up to their parents dreams for their life. They also are not happy with their choices because it tends to be something that they are not passionate about. As one may know many parents help out with the cost of college and many students will always want to choose a career that their parents approve of because they know that their parents are footing the bill. Zinsser also stresses the importance of looking at all options and considering different career paths even though parents are wanting what's best for their child. Some of the careers that parents dream about their kids having one day include lots of schooling, even up to eight or ten…

Now college is like a new turning point for people who have just graduated out of high school and students are very bias about going to college or not. So I think they should go straight into the work force and there are some reasons why student don’t go to college. Students don’t want to go to college because maybe they think of it as a waste of time and that they have no need to go to another school to learn a specific course for 4 years and that they can do it themselves. For examples some artist in the music industry didn’t go to college like J Cole or Rihanna didn’t study music just to be an artist. College is a very difficult decision in many people's lives around the world. The stories of Bill Gates, Mark Zuckerberg and Steve Jobs show that sometimes college would not be the best idea for some people. Even my father, who dropped out of college, is very successful and supports his family wealthily, while not having to do as much work as most people. However, these successful people went through difficult times and failed much in life, before becoming who they are now. While many people believe college is not worth it, it really is, because college is a pathway for many people into a great career, while also allowing graduates the gain of knowledge from the experience.…

Personally, I strongly disagree with this concept that says education is an essential way to success. I think there are many way to success and one of the most essential keys to be successful is to have the natural skill and talents. From sports to music and art, for example, they do not need practicing. They just use their talent from their birth for their work. Let’s me take an example of Rachael Ray, the star chef barely received any formal cooking training, let alone a college degree. In her twenties, Ray bounced around food service jobs in New York City and Albany.…
