Pluto should not be considered a planet to me because it doesn’t have a cleared orbit. Pluto should stay a dwarf planet because it is the smallest planet in the solar system. Also Pluto’s moon is bigger than it therefore, is often mistaken as a double planet. Pluto shouldn’t be a part of the planets because according to the article “Why Pluto is no longer a Planet” by Fraser Cain the
evidence states that Pluto only meets one third of the IAU (International Astronomical Union). The following criteria that it needs to meet is 1.) It needs to be in orbit around the sun. 2.) It needs to have enough gravity. 3.) It needs to have “cleared the neighborhood” of its orbit.
If Pluto becomes a planet many other rock like objects will become planets, therefore it wouldn’t be 9 planets anymore. Pluto and its moons are a large collection of objects called the “Kuiper Belt”. The Kuiper Belt goes past Neptune’s orbit just like Pluto does. As stated in the article “Why Pluto is no longer a Planet” by F. Cain is states that astronomers estimate that there are at least 70,000 icy objects with the same composition as Pluto. According to the article most planets have thick to no atmospheres but Pluto has a very thin atmosphere. Pluto is 30 to 49 astronomical units from the sun.
Some people may say should be a planet because it meets at least two of the criteria. But they are wrong because it has to meet all the criteria. Pluto should not be considered a planet because of the many complications it has.
Overall, Pluto should not be a planet because it simply doesn’t fit the right criteria of the IAU. I conclude with all the evidence I have gathered that Pluto does not fit in with all of the other 8 planets of the Solar System.
