A. Demographics of Winston Salem
Introduction
As we consider the viability of incorporating religious education into the curriculum of public schools in Forsyth County, understanding the nuances of the school community’s population is crucial. Whether we consciously recognize it or not, the demographic categories we identify with have a powerful influence in shaping our outlooks, prejudices, loyalties, and receptiveness to new ideas. In order to gain a well-rounded picture of the population of Forsyth county, we cast a magnifying glass on the following categories: religious background, race/ethnicity, education level, income, and political affiliation. The data collected in each of these respective categories provided a roadmap, alerting us to possible obstacles the implementation of our program may face due to its underlying demographics and allowing us to make more attuned recommendations in our quest to overcome them. …show more content…
As you can see, the number of Democrats (53.038%) significantly outnumbers the amount of Republicans (45.826%). We believe this bodes well for the implementation of our religious education problem. Democrats typically take more liberal views when it comes to political issues than their Republican counterparts. Whereas Republicans, who tend to identify more with Christian values and ideology, often oppose progressive social issues like gay marriage and abortion, Democrats tend to be in favor of their permission. Furthermore, the Democratic party tends to be composed of a more diverse group of individuals, particularly with regards to race. We hope that the Democratic majority of Winston-Salem will stay true to their liberal, progressive, and diverse roots and give their support to our program aimed at enhancing young people’s understanding and tolerance of different religious
