Should Richer Countries Help Poorer Countries?
Some people live in a country where every minute of everyday they are hungry, under clothed, and at risk for death because they are poor. Other people wake up and their biggest problem is which shirt to wear with which jeans. Both are scenarios that occur on a daily basis in our countries, some more extreme than others. With that in mind a question of whether or not rich nations have an obligation to help those nations as need arises. Professor of philosophy Peter Singer believes “ It is the responsibility of affluent nations, such as the United States, to assist poor nations in which people are starving to death” (1). I agree with this statement that richer countries should help poor countries for several reasons, richer countries should send educators to poorer countries to teach both children and adults, richer countries should do more charity work for poorer countries, and helping out other countries in need will teach richer countries to be more appreciative for what they have.
