Less than 18 months after Rome unveiled its ambitions plans to host the 2024 Olympics, the city could be ready to abandon its Olympic project.
The writing was on the wall as soon as the Five Star Movement (M5S) took control of city hall in June. The city's new mayor, 37-year-old lawyer, Virginia Raggi, during her election campaign repeatedly said she was not in favour of the 2024 bid, insisting the city had more pressing issues to solve.
Since coming to power, her stance has not changed. This week, it was announced the council would send a single representative to the imminent 2016 games in Rio, although the council insist a final decision on the 2024 bid has not yet been made.

According to Coni, Rome already has 70 percent of the structures it needs to host the games, having already hosted the games in 1960.
Closer to home, the 2002 Winter Olympics in Turin are credited with having a similar effect on the city, which developed a brand new system of modern trams to deal with the influx of visitors for the games.
Today, many of the sites which were developed for the games are state-of-the-art sports facilities and others have been re developed into high-end bars, which are popular hangouts for metropolitan Torinesi.
More importantly, the games are credited with boosting the city's international appeal to international visitors and investors as they showed it is more than merely the industrial home of Italian car-makers Fiat.
While Rome may not need to improve it's image as a tourist destination, the idea the city could invest a significant portion of its Olympic money into improving its notoriously inefficient public transport and potholed roads is appealing to
