Should Spanish colonial settlers accept the New Laws of 1542?
Background Movies
Conquistadors:
conquerors tha claimed a vast empire for Spain. Pursued economic,political, and religious goals.
King Charles I of Spain:
1531 responded to the massacres by the conquisadors. He required Christian missionaries to accompany all expeditions.
Bartolomé de las Casas:
was a spokesman for the plight of the natives. Spanish missionary who traveled throughout the colonies for 40 yrs. His book the "A Short Account of the Destruction of the Indies"
condemned the treatment of the Indians in the encomienda system.
Believed that the were a spiritial people and to weak for physical plantation labor
Viceroys:
enforceers of the New Laws- often profited from the encom. system. Had very little incentive to uphold the New Laws
Mercantilism:
when the colonies supplied raw materials and that European powers produced and exported finished goods in hopes of increasing exporting
Encomienda system:
forces labor system that was granted by the king to the settlers. allowed settlers to demand labor and feudal dues from the natives. followed the commonly accepted logic of the 15th century Europe. (where certain people were meant to be slaved, while others were natural masters)
New Laws of 1542:
outlawed forced labor, identified Indians as wards of the state in which to be protected and given religious instructions.

I learned that becasue of the great distance between Spain and the new Colonies, it was very hard to enforce the New Laws also the viceroies didn't want to enforce them becasue they would lose money.
