Everyone feels the excitement in the night air, the lights beating down on you, thousands of fans coming out to watch their favorite team battle to take the win. Kickoff, and it begins, the start of your college career and the beginning of the second and most important half of your life. As you manage your time and spend it wisely on both your free education and being an athlete, school feels like a breeze as you walk around campus as one of the big dogs in town. People may think that it is difficult to play a college sport and get career studies, but it isn’t impossible through new college programs for athletes to come. There have been recent studies to try to help improve college athletics throughout universities. “Offering an associates bachelor’s degree would place more emphasis on academics, and give the student-athlete more in return for …show more content…
A famous NFL player Richard Sherman says,” Student athletes are not given enough time to get their school work done.” Students who participate in sports should be given more time to finish all of their work as they have a timed schedule of practices that they can’t miss. Teachers should know that athletes have busy schedules and have little time to plan out when they can do their homework. Students shouldn’t be given any extra privileges, but rather more time to get their work in on time. This would assure the university and professors that the student athletes are getting their work done in a timely manner in order to keep their grades up and keep up with new lesson plans.” No I don’t think college athletes are given enough time to take advantage of their free education that they are given,” (Sherman) as a man who has been in this same situation through college and is now in the pros, agrees that student athletes aren’t given the time they need to fully accomplish their school work and take advantage of the free education that they are given and have

For many college athletes, the lure of playing pro sports is intoxicating. Dreams of fancy cars, luxurious homes, tailor-made suits, voluptuous women, and the mental images of a crowded stadium chanting their name is enough for any collegiate athlete to think about abandoning their education for a chance at stardom. When the dreams are solidified with million dollar contracts, think immediately is replaced by impulse. Left behind in the frenzy is the much needed college education that no one seems to care about any more. An athletes only hope is to complete a college education first for what life's lessons has to offer later when hard-knocks is the final exam.…

For many students, the college experience is measured by the success of their NCAA-sanctioned athletic programs. Without the experience and athletic performance the student athlete brings, most colleges would not reap the benefit of these significant revenue-generating activities. At best, current NCAA regulations need to be revisited to ensure all avenues are addressed to enable the success of athletic students both in the classroom and on the field or court of play. As stated previously, even though students receive full and partial scholarships determined by their athletic performance, in both instances financial hardship is still experienced by many. Since the various professional sports’ programs reap the conditioning and experience of college student athletes, sponsorship initiatives should be pursued to allow student athletes some form of payment without creating additional outlays for colleges and universities.…

Sometimes a student-athlete doesn’t properly acknowledge their schedule and put forward one over the other, allowing the forgotten one to deteriorate over time. Education is left behind while athletes apply all their energy into sports -- main point for attending a college is to obtain an education. They’d rather hit the gym than the books, they have always been told that they are talented enough to go far, but never that education will further their goals in life. In this statement, “Mary Willingham’s stunning charges that 60 percent of the University of North Carolina’s (UNC) football and basketball players read below the 8th grade level” (Power 1). Willingham is a researcher for the University of North Carolina, she illustrates students mentality as unfocused on their studies. Enabling student-athletes to receive paychecks will only increase the percentage as they now believe that their sport has turned into a job, when money starts hitting their bank accounts they will forget about school. If since from the gecko, students are given the idea that they don't have to pay attention in school to be successful, then they will never know what to do when an injury occurs ending their career. An education should prepare you for the real world by understanding how to handle your money, problems that pro’s…

Many people fail to realize that college athletes give most of their time to the sport that gave them a scholarship. They have time built in their schedule just for classes and study hall. Woodrow states, “success in graduating athletes then constitutes supporting evidence” (paragraph 4). He also states, “the success or lack thereof is universally measured by comparing athlete graduation rates to general student body rates (paragraph 4). There really shouldn’t be a comparison between the two because the general students have way more time to their studies than athletes. Some big time colleges have strategies on how to improve the graduation rates for athletes. Southhall states, “as part of the strategy, the NCAA strives “to ensure the academic commitment of student athletes and to increase the likelihood that they will earn degrees (paragraph 10). He also states, along these lines, in 2005 the NCAA formulated a tool called the Graduation Success Rate (GSR) for Division I Schools (paragraph 10). This means that they are committed to getting degrees regardless if they are an athlete or not. Robst states, “Many feel that participation in sports inhibits students ' ability to do well in the classroom (paragraph 1). This means that people think since you participate in a sport that you can’t make the grades. Participating in sports in college and making good grades is all on the…

The existence of college athletics is often justified on the grounds that its success attracts students and is far more than just extracurricular activities. I tend to agree with that. However, a common counterpoint is its cost. Those who believe this statement students argue they shouldn't support athletics since its rising expenses and the pursuit of more revenue to support college sports have become a destabilizing force. Such as the words of Sally Jenkins, "Athletic departments take in more money than ever — and spend it just as fast". That is an understandable concern. Most of the time, college spending on athletics seems is growing far more quickly than spending on academics, and seems mostly dependent students fee. Even though college…

"Should College Athletes Get Paid To Play" Forget about the game-winning touchdown, forget about the cheerleader girlfriend, and forget the pageantry. What about the hard earned money college athletes will never see and earned? In the world of college sports its win or go home, and to the winners go the spoils. Most successful college sports teams rake in millions of dollars in revenue. Steve Spurrier, the coach for the Florida Gators signed a six year contract where he would make a little over 2.5 million dollars a year not including certain benefits like a free car for his wife. So with the institutions and coaches getting rich off their player who is to say that the player does not deserve a share of the wealth? Most college athletes get around 200-250 dollars a month for living expenses and spending money, this is very small compared to the student who has time to work. Some people say that athletes get paid by having a scholarship but if you look at the ulterior motive behind scholarships I think people would change their minds. Coaches try to get players who they think have the talent to make them win and to persuade them to come to their school they try to give them scholarships. So the whole idea behind a scholarship is to lure the student to come to your school. Scholarships are just a recruitment tactic. Don't confuse what I am saying though I don't think college players should be making millions of dollars but there should be a set salary for all players no matter if they make the highlights everyday or ride the pine. The players should make at least what a person who works making eight dollars and hour would make in a year, and that is a modest salary too. Every player of a college sport puts in countless man-hours of work to their sport instead of going out and getting a job they have to devote all their time to this. A huge debate is should players have the right to their likenesses? If you go to a bookstore…

Should you only reward youth athletes who earn their trophies? Participation trophies the easy way out. Participation trophies not only harm youth athletes, nut are a waste of money in youth organizations. Giving participation trophies decreases motivation. It is ok to give participation awards to 6-8 year old's, but not to older youth athletes. Should student athletes get paid? This question has long been debated for quite some time in various institutions and organizations. With the upcoming focus on the NCAA, especially in our own division of the Big East, the question on how players should be compensated is brought up. It is no secret that student athletes are compensated in various ways, whether it is through scholarships or complimentary housing, but questions of paying the student athletes a surplus in addition to tuition costs has been raised. This idea seems appealing to private universities with generous funding because it allows them to attract the top players to their school. I believe that student athletes should not be paid any additional money than that which covers their tuition costs.…

As early as the third grade, I remember being involved in sports. Whether it was volleyball, basketball, or dance I have been given the privilege to play on many teams. The life of a young athlete is great, however, it can become very stressful. At all ages an athlete is forced to cope with school, sports, and a social life. Along with all of that, athletes are expected to deal with extra stress and even stricter rules. Over the years I have realized all student-athletes are treated differently and are held to a higher standard. (1)…

Should College Athletes be paid? There is a huge debate around the nation, whether college athletes should be paid. Since college athletes contribute to millions of dollars in revenue for the NCAA as well as their respective schools, many argue that they deserve to be paid. On the other hand, since many college athletes get free education and other benefits, many say they are being compensated already. All things considered, college athletes should not be paid because after all, most college athletic programs do not generate profits.…
