The right to speak freely is often taken for granted, people will speak their mind and ignore the repercussions of it. Thus, people will continue to do so during wartime. This causes a problem as some ideas can inspire others to go against the war effort. Without the support of the citizens, a nation would fail at any conflict. By failing to support the troops, the citizens would be causing more deaths than if they did support the war effort. Therefore, it was decided that it was best to limit freedom of speech, in order to avoid that situation.

But the First Amendment is not unlimited, during times of war the problems that could be caused by various forms of speech can incite a movement of going against the war effort. This presents a danger as the soldiers on the frontlines would lose the supplies that the civilians were sending and would lose soldiers due to the resist of the draft. If that happened the U.S. would lose any conflict it was participating in. This would cause more unecessary deaths than if there were no problems on the home front.
