The Syrian uprising is an ongoing internal conflict that began in January 2011. Demonstrators throughout Syria are protesting for the resignation of President Basher al-Assad. Syria has strong International relations with Iran, China and Russia, predominately Arms related. Basher al-Assad was elected initially in 2000, although there were not any other candidates put forward, but was subsequently elected again in 2007, this was unopposed on both occasions.
