Obama proposed raising the minimum wage to $9.00 an hour, because the United States is “the wealthiest nation on Earth.” Obama also claims “no one who works full time should have to live in poverty.” In a debate situation, typically the Democrats would vote for raising the minimum wage, while the Republicans would vote against it. Even without a debate, there are many reasons not to increase the minimum wage. If the minimum wage is increased, there would be higher risks of unemployment. Yes the people with jobs would be well off, but the people without jobs would be suffering. Obama states how increasing the minimum wage would lower the number of people in poverty, but raising the minimum wage would not help this problem. Most people that live
in poverty do not work anyways, so increasing the minimum wage would not help them. Minimum wage jobs are typically for young adults or the secondary income for a family. Young adults and low skill workers would not have jobs if the minimum wage was increased. If poverty is such a big deal, there are smarter ways to achieve lowering it. Increasing the minimum wage is so hard to resist doing if involved in politics.
