Should the Need for People to Travel from Home to Work, Education or Shopping Be Reduced to Reduce the Amount of Traffic?
Argumentative Essay

The only way to reduce the amount of traffic in cities today is by reducing the need for people to travel from home to work, education or shopping.
To what extent do you agree or disagree?

People went out from their house for personal purposes such as going to workplace, school and shopping. Moreover, they use their own vehicles as their main transport probably because it is more convenient than public transport. This situation causes traffic during peak hours which sometimes lead to a very serious hindrance. These gains attentions from many parties as they argue that people need to travel in order to manage their daily routine and the traffic could not be helped. On the other hand, many people agree that the only way to reduce the amount of traffic is by reducing the need for people to travel. I totally disagree due to several reasons.

Firstly, if the daily routine such as work, study and shopping must be done online, it means that people may consume most of their time at home. These might lead to less social contact, as they did not go outside and mingle around. Moreover, the students especially have to socialize with their peers to build their social skills. Besides, lack of social contact would have a large impact on the society as they would become less expressive and too uptight due to the lacking on social skills.

Secondly, restricting people to go out from their house is not the only solution for the traffic. There are other solutions which could be considered as alternative measure. Carpooling, increasing the usage of public transportation and adjusting the travelling schedule could be practiced to lessen the traffic. The government should advance those kinds of campaigns to encourage the public.

Some people may say that we should wisely use the technologies that have been created; one should not waste their energy and time to do something that they are able to do by online. However, these may lead to other problems.

Research found out that “urban air pollution is caused primarily by emission from automobiles and secondarily by emissions from electric power plants and heavy industries”(Sociology 427). If residence in the busy city like Los Angeles increase carpooling in their household like during the Olympics in 1984, the ozone levels might drop more than the impact back then has resulted which is a 12 percent drop (Sociology 427). But once the Olympic is over people are back to their routine that is stop carpooling. It is hard to get out from the comfort zone and make a change to something insignifant to us like 12 percent drop in ozone level. And thus it is inevitable to keep polluting our society to provide sufficient energy to transport a dad to go to work, a child to go to school and a mom to do grocery…

As a result of an increased population inhabiting one area, traffic congestion is often a major issue resulting from urbanisation. In London, traffic is evidently a problem. As it would be expected from a capital city home to more than 8 million people, alongside the 30 million visitors received per year, the London road network is often under tremendous strain. Despite London’s extensive public transport facilities, many still choose to drive their own vehicles around the city. In Mumbai, the road network suffers a similar strain, unable to cope with the millions it carries each day, it suffers from increased journey times, congestion, and air pollution. In London, park and ride schemes, cycle lanes, congestion charging schemes and low emission zones have been introduced to combat the traffic. In terms of its success, an example of immediate impact was the introduction of the congestion charge, reducing the amount of traffic in the heart of the capital by about 15 per cent. However, according to TFL, the reduction has not been sustained. In Mumbai, people have tried using alternative vehicles such as mopeds and scooters, and whilst this helps them to dodge traffic jams, it has only contributed more to the poor air quality caused by emissions. Ultimately, it is clear that not all solutions are effective, but in a wealthier country like the UK, there is a much higher chance of success due to the funding fuelled into these schemes; with time, the schemes may…

In my opinion, cars should be restricted from town centres but only during peak hours. It would be impractical and impossible to ban cars completely because they are such an essential part of modern city living, however the problems of pollution and traffic congestion must be reduced. This solution is not perfect but the best we can do, and infact is done already in some major cities like Melborn in…

More people have a car nowadays, which means more space is needed for roads. How can we prevent our future cities to become highways? More cars means more pollution, more pollution means a bigger chance for people getting sick. This immediately affects the quality of life in the city. The first problem for future cities mentioned in the paragraph above is the growing traffic density. The mitigation strategy for this problem is efficient public transport. For example, take New York City. New York City is a city with 8.4 million people (United States Census bureau, 2013). The image from the streets of New York City is known worldwide, streets packed with cars, yellow cabs and buses. What happens beneath the streets of New York is the most important part for future cities. New York’s subway are the veins of the city’s mobility. ‘The subways were crucially important to the growth and geographic expansion of New York City’ (Lee, 2012). Today the population of New York could be smaller by millions of people if not for the ambitious subway building projects undertaken a century ago (Lee, 2012). To make sure our future cities don’t silt up with cars we need an efficient public transport network like New York…

Then, we move on the second point: innovations in information technology have led to a decrease in social activities and relations in people’s lives. In today’s society, more and more people stay indoors, in front of their computers rather than going out and it leads to unsociable lives. Plus, people started to prefer talking on the internet or chatting by cell phones as it is the quickest and easiest way to communicate. Consequently, face-to-face relationships started to…

During these holidays we have in the spring, spring break, I made a road trip with my friends through several cities and states of the U.S. coast. That fact has given me to compare many aspects between towns and cities here against the cities in Europe. There are many aspects that differentiate us Europeans with Americans, and there are also great differences between our cities, infrastructure, decor, shapes of buildings and many other aspects. But one of the great things that has struck me is how little suffering American cities with traffic problems.…
