Should The Retirement Age Be Raised?
Many countries all over the world are contemplating in the process of raising the retirement age for their national systems. Some countries have already taken steps to address the issue. From 2009, Singapore began raising the age from 55 to 65 within the next couples of years. In the U.S and Germany, workers can plan to retire at 67 as late as 2050, and in Japan and Mexico at 65. Italy and Denmark are the only two countries which are expected to raise their pension age to 69 by 2050. Proposing an appropriate age for retirement is one of the most sensitive, complicated concern and affects all aspects of society. So, should the retirement age be raised? There are many debates among policy analysts and workers. Some ideas shows that increasing …show more content…
However, the state of retirement age should not be raised for two reasons relate to workers’ benefits and the increasing of unemployment rate.
First of all, increasing the state of retirement age can affect workers’ benefits. Working for extra years influences workers’ health. Government Relations and Policy(2016) argues that because of the health condition, not every worker could go on their job in the elder years. At the age of 55, people start to face with many healthy problems, especially many geriatric diseases. Moreover, people should not work for some kind of manual jobs and jobs which demand working in hazardous place for a long time, because these jobs can make workers’ health worse and lead them to suffer many diseases. Therefore, health condition does not allow workers to work in the additional 3 or

Ielts Practice’s (2013) study found the following:
Aged employees may be able to take more mature decisions than their younger counterparts. They also have decades of experience behind them. If they stop working after they reach 60 or 65, it is sheer wastage of knowledge acquired over decades. Therefore, it is advisable that governments and companies design special employment schemes for older people. Their knowledge and experience could be used to train fresh employees.
However, not every kind jobs need the seniority. There are many kind of blue-collar jobs that are not appropriate for old workers. Because of the health condition, they cannot work more efficiently than the young workers. Government Relations and Policy(2016) believed that it is a challenge for older workers to get use to the change of technology so it is not necessary for employers to keep them when professional young workforces can do those jobs. The employers also need young workforces to bring more new perspectives to the jobs. Some others think that lengthening the age of retirement can help workers to support for their family’s income. On the other hand, after a long time devoting for working , they are deserved to enjoy the life more than continue to work. Additionally, they are not healthy enough to take charge of working every day and it is better for them to relax,

Age discrimination is existent. Older employees are defined as members of the “mature” generation (58 or more years old); younger employees are members of three generations—the Baby Boom (post World War II or 38 – 57 year olds), Generation X (23 – 37 year olds), and Generation Y (18 – 22 year olds). “The key to a company’s future success will be its adaptability – its capacity to deploy resources quickly to seize competitive opportunities and to draw from a labor pool that features a mix of multi-skilled, full-time workers, and specifically-skilled, contingent employees who contribute on a part-time or temporary basis” (Hall and Mirvis, 1998). Research is conducted when individuals or businesses want to find out the connection, if any, between two or more things. This paper will discuss, “Will hiring younger employees to take the place of older employees increase the productivity of a business?”…

In 1946, America received its first round of baby boomers that continued for the course of 18 years in which more than seventy-nine million babies were born. With that being said, most of the first round of baby boomers are turning 66 this year while the last flood of baby boomers will turn 48 (About.com.Geography ). With this becoming a reality for many employers it is no wonder that management faces many new challenges. However, this challenge is around to stay. Many employers are faced with the first wave of baby boomers to have faced retirement last year and many more to come in the following years. This is alarming because in order to receive full retirement benefits you must be 65, however, you may start receiving benefits at the age of 62. In 1983, the government passed a law making the retirement age gradually higher until those born after 1959 will need to be 67 to receive full retirement benefits (Social Security Online). The havoc this creates for management is the fact that it with the retirement age increasing it means that employers must find way to keep the aging workforce satisfied. With this comes many challenges including learning how to manage an aging workforce, training the elder employees to ever changing rules and regulations, and training the new employees that are taking over positions.…

The economy’s long-term shift toward knowledge-based jobs and away from physical labor is a force that might be increasing the rolls of older workers. Already, older employees with higher level of education seem to be playing a major role in the trend (Peterson). The problem is that companies are going to need to hire somebody young who has the same brain of a 64-year-old but is able to perform tasks more efficiently like a 24-year-old. “Health problems and workplace pressures such as cutbacks force many workers into retirement earlier than they expect. And employers that have a choice often prefer the young, viewing older workers as costly and resistant to new technologies” (Peterson). Soon, employers will not have a choice whether they want to hire an old, sophisticated employee or a young, energetic employee. “By 2003, 82% of baby boomers were in the labor force. In the last four years, that baby boomer retirement figure has jumped from 10% to 17%, while their labor force participation rate has just hit a 36-year low in 2014” (“Baby Boomers and Retirement”). A company must conclude whether it is worth their money and time to hire a retiree. The problem is that the retiree community in this country has little savings, so they feel the pressure to continue working. Consequently, this also means a fair amount of baby boomers will need to depend on others, such as the government or family to support them once they finish…

This is especially true for the employment sector, where employers have failed to take advantage of the skilled labor force available from this population. Often, employers perceive older adults as fitting into one profile, not realizing that similar to the rest of the population, each senior citizen is unique, has unique skills as well as capabilities and needs. When this is taken into account, it means that some employers have been able to carefully select older workers to fill specific positions within the organization. I myself have had the privilege to work in various organizations during my senior years and had the opportunity to positively contribute to the wellbeing of society. Individuals aged above 50 years old are still running large companies in senior management positions while others are still able to work in labor intensive industries such as manufacturing and…

Moreover, the number of unemployed old people is going to rise. Improvements in health care and medicine make people live longer than they used to be. Katie Allen writes, "By 2020 a third of the working-age population will be over 50. If employers are reluctant to hire them, there could be huge costs in benefit payments and lost spending power. There is also the loss to employers as they struggle to fill vacancies" (The guardian).…

The pension reform is expected to be introduced in 2012. The government has said that the overall aim of the reform is to get more people to save for their retirement. The general consensus from the change is that workers are being made to pay more, work for longer and receive less when they retire. This consensus is understandable because ultimately that is exactly what is happening, however whether or not it is bad thing is under question. In summary the changes will make the retirement age rise to equal the state retirement age of 65, and then when the state retirement age increases to 68, the public sector retirement age is to rise in line with it. The state retirement age is planned to increase from 65 to 66 by 2020 and then to 67 by 2036 and 68 by 2046(Jackson Jeffery, Pension Reforms 2012).…

This paper examines the issue of ageism in the workplace, including how ageism is defined, issues associated with it, and ways to overcome this form of discrimination. Ageism is usually thought to affect older adults, but research shows that ageism can affect adults of all ages. For the purposes of this paper, I will focus on two particular groups; Baby-Boomers and Generation X. There are numerous issues associated with ageism such as health and how it affects job performance, whether physical or mental; costs to both the employer and employee including psychological costs as well as financial; adapting to the ever-changing technology industry; educating the work force and giving them opportunities to remain viable employees; identifying risks associated with ageism and the long term effects that may occur. Finally I will look at ways to combat ageism including education, both internal and external, as well as mentoring opportunities by both management and peers.…
