Should Women Be Allowed To Serve In The Military Roles

Commandant of the Marine Corps Gen. James F. Amos, released a statement stating that because of a Congressional direct in the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), the Secretary of Defense will require all branches of the military to assess the impact of newly opened Military Occupational Specialties, in previously closed units. In such statement, he informed that the Marine Corps will research and conduct multiple studies to make an informed and educated decision that could result in policy change (Marine, 2012). Current policy restricts the assignment of women serving in primary MOS to certain units that are in the ground combat element. What this means is that even though women may not be infantry, they were not allowed to serve alongside these infantry units, even though their jobs were clerical, medical, intelligence, or support. This exception will allow certain women be able to serve in artillery, tanks, amphibians, combat engineer, combat assault, and low altitude air Defense Battalion. Certain females possessing administration, statistics, communications and other Military Occupational Specialties may be assigned
The only female Marine who supported the integration of combat units stated that “If a woman can qualify to serve in one of these units, then she should be allowed to, however I do not think that most women have the capabilities to pass.” When asked if the Marine Corps should change the qualifying regulation in order to make it easier to women, this same female stated “NO! I think they must passes it, as is.” What this Marine was trying to say was that, it should not matter if a woman can or cannot serve in a combat unit, she should be given at least the opportunity to prove
