Should Women Serve in Combat Roles?
March 20, 2005, was another ordinary day in Iraq when anti-Iraqi fighters ambushed a supply convoy and Sergeant Hester led the squad into the kill zone repelling the enemies attack with grenades and an M203 grenade launcher leaving 27 insurgents dead, six wounded, and one captured. On June 16, 2005, Sergeant Leigh Ann Hester, (23), was the first woman solider to receive the Silver Star since World War II. This position paper will provide background information, discussion, and a recommendation if women should serve in combat roles.

As Senior Enlisted Leaders know that, the role for women in our military is changing as modern warfare has. Whether in a direct or supportive combat role, women have earned the right to prove if they are capable of serving in combat units to serve the world’s finest military organization on the front lines.
