In the video Sick Around the World, we saw how different countries have very different health care systems than our own here in the US. What I found so surprising is that the other countries pay so little for their health care and still get the same, if not better, health care coverage that we get here. In some cases, in the U.S. people go bankrupt while trying to pay medical bills and in every other country in the video they all stated that no one has ever gone bankrupt while paying off medical bills. In the U.K. they have a government run NHS which is funded through taxes. Also, in the U.S. our patients have more freedom as to where they want to get treated at, and in other countries they do not have a choice. Also other countries governments have a very high control in their health care system. Going along with the freedom we have in the U.S. we don’t have to be referred to a specialist. This is a good thing for us because since we like our freedom and want to see a specialist for some reason all we have to do is set up an appointment, as opposed to other countries where they have to go to a general physician in order to be referred to the specialist. Lastly, we also like our privacy and we have this privilege when it comes to getting treated. Another big difference in the U.S. and other countries around the world is the amount of money we pay for medical school. In other countries people pay little to nothing to go to medical school and in the U.S. people may pay up to $100,000 for schooling.
