The green light at the end of Tom Buchanan’s dock represents one of the many motifs in The
Great Gatsby it has many examples thought out the book such as Gatsby’s Love for daisy, his obsession with getting her back and Gatsby’s dissatisfaction with his own life ever since daisy left his life when he went to war. This symbol is constantly shown throughout the book as
Gatsby is constantly checking out the window looking to look at the light.
The first reference to Gatsby’s dissatisfaction with his own life is when he is outside his house one night he “he stretched out his arms toward the dark water… nothing except a green light”
(Fitzgerald#21). He looks out toward the light as if the light is what keeps him going during the
