Professionalism is defined as “the level of excellence or competence that is expected of a professional.” Professionalism is important to me because it is an essential element for ensuring quality and value for the public and for anyone working in or interconnected with IT.
Two reason for IT professionalism
I consider IT professionalism an important goal for any serious IT practitioner. The benefits are twofold: professional growth, and personal development.
Professional Growth
As an IT professional, I must follow the Code of Ethics and Professional Code of Conduct. I am committed to following these principles and perform my work in due regard to public health, safety, and the environment.
• As an IT Professional, I am encouraged to pursue lifetime learning and to apply critical thinking in my professional behavior.
• As a member of IT industry, I have access to local and national IT conferences. These conferences enable many networking and mentorship opportunities.
Personal Growth • I can blend experiences with education and establish a unique relationship between professional development and personal growth. • I can strive for a close alignment between my personal values, professional responsibility, business priorities, and social responsibility to minimize moral dilemmas. • I can apply the Code of Ethics and Professional Code of Conduct when making decisions involving social responsibility, diversity, harassment, and even conflicting views of intellectual property.
Conclusion
IT professionalism also demonstrates competence in the IT industry, both to clients and to IT professionals. I believe that education is the golden key that opens many doors, and the requirements of IT professionalism act as an enabler for my lifetime learning goals.
