RITTMAN — Residents turned out in force Monday, creating a standing-room-only environment in council chambers, to voice their displeasure about legislation that would have prohibited the use of minibikes, ATVs and other similar vehicles within city limits.…
In William Shakespeare’s play, “Macbeth”, one dominant moral is made clear to the audience, do not tempt fate, let nature take its course. Some of the ways that Shakespeare achieves this is through the development of conflicts in the plot and also through dialogue, vivid imagery and metaphors created by the atmosphere in the play. The characters develop in the early acts to identify the protagonist and antagonists to the audience. The characters contribute rhetoric that reveals the disturbing of Shakespeare’s theory of the Great Chain of Being, the natural course of order.…
Though all of Creon’s decisions caused many deaths to happen and much sadness to come to him he still gets some sympathy. Creon says: “Nothing you say can touch me more. – My own blind has throught me from darkness to finish darkness -… I was the fool, not you: and you died for me” (Exodos, line 95). This shows that he knows he was a “fool” and regrets what he has done. It also shows that he is unhappy about the way he handled the situation. A person could show sympathy, in that all he feels is “darkness”, and anyone who has experienced loss understands this pain and suffering that he is going through. Creon says: “Lead me away. – I have been rash and foolish – I have killed my son and my wife. – I look for comfort; my comfort lies here dead.…

William Shakespeare has been, and continues to be, one of the most famous writers of all time. His writings, specifically playwrights, include varieties of different writing techniques that never fail to capture the attention of audiences of all ages. One of his most famous tragedies – Macbeth – is certainly no disappointment. Though Macbeth is one of his shortest tragedies, Shakespeare takes the elements of madness, evilness, and jealousness and wraps them up into a timeless tale chock full of literary elements. One of the most studied and most profound literary elements found in Macbeth is foreshadowing. Foreshadow; verb; be a warning or indication of (a future event).” Foreshadowing gives the audience a hint of what is to come without completely giving away the event, though it will make sense after the event happens. The first example of foreshadowing we see in Macbeth is found in Act 1, Scene 1 in the three witches’ prophecies. We see the three witches show up multiple times throughout Macbeth to hint at the future. The reader immediately sees an example of the prophecies in Act 1, Scene 1 when the witches are talking about meeting Macbeth. They say that they will meet him “when the battle’s lost and won” (Act 1, Scene 1). Logistically, this phrase makes sense because every battle will have a loser and a winner, however when we look at the deeper meaning of this phrase, it shows the witches’ recurring “double meaning” way of speaking that will eventually give false hope to Macbeth in the ending battle scenes. We see another example of foreshadowing in the Act 1, Scene 1 witches’ prophecies of Macbeth as well. All of the witches come together and yell “Fair is foul, and foul is fair” (Act 1, Scene 1). The element of this phrase recurs throughout Macbeth to show the differences between reality and appearance. Macbeth quotes a similar version of this phrase in his first entrance when he says “So foul and fair a day I have not seen” (Act 1, Scene 3). The...…
In William Shakespeare's play Macbeth, the reader is left to ponder the question of whether fate or free will is responsible for Macbeth's actions. Some people believe that the three sisters control Macbeth's fate and that he is as much a victim as King Duncan and his grooms, while others believe that Macbeth, alone, is responsible for his actions. Although fate has a part in Macbeth's decisions, the story is a tragedy of character. The witches prophesy that Macbeth will someday be king and Lady Macbeth rouses his hidden aspirations and desires, but it is Macbeth's ambition that gives rise to the poor decisions he makes to fulfill the prophecy.…
Many people have hopes and goals that they would like to accomplish. They may desire powerful positions or jobs, while others may desire prosperity and riches. This is known as ambition, the spell binding force that leads people towards success. However, ambition may result in harmful acts to get their satisfaction. In William Shakespeare’s tragic play, Macbeth, the protagonist, Macbeth, is described as a very loyal and noble soldier. As the play progresses, Macbeth’s character dramatically changes because of several different factors. These factors influence Macbeth greatly and cause him to make numerous bad decisions. The influence of the witches’ prophecies, the influence of Lady Macbeth, and Macbeth’s blind ambitions are the most important factors that lead to Macbeth’s tragic deterioration.…
Ambition is the strong desire to achieve a specific goal and is often driven by determination. It can guide people to achieve goals and aspirations, and some are willing to do anything in order to satisfy their ambitious personalities. The French military and political Napoleon Bonaparte successfully defined what ambition truly is by stating, “Great ambition is the passion of a great character. Those endowed with it may perform very good or very bad acts. All depends on the principles which direct them.” In other words, ambition is not only aspirations that will help people strive to their successes, but it can also fuel a dangerous desire that people will manipulate and use toward ruthless acts. The desire to achieve has proven to emphasize…

Bill Bradley says, “Ambition is the path to success.” Ambition is the strong desire to achieve something. It can have a positive or negative effect on one. In Macbeth, Macbeth suffers from ambition, and it is his tragic flaw. Macbeth has a passion to become king and have power. He uses the ambition throughout the play which contribute to many murders. In Shakespeare’s Macbeth, the protagonist Macbeth uses ambition to kill the king, murder Banquo's’ sons, and kill Macduff’s family.…
King James VI, king of Scotland, ascended to the throne of England after the death of Queen Elizabeth I. This act united Scotland and England under one rule. While King James was alive, He was interested in the world of witchcraft and wrote a book about the subject called Daemonologie. In Macbeth Shakespeare uses Macbeth and his misunderstanding of the fates as a representation of King James and his misconception of witches and their true nature.…
Macbeth brings to light the depths to which he is fallen for his power. He is so focused on fighting to protect his power that he doesn't even stop to grieve for his wife, who has just died. "She should have died hereafter. / There would have been a time for such a word" (5.5.77). Macbeth has truly lost everything except for the power that he desperately clings to. He has lost his friends, his honor, his allies, his loyal subjects, and now his wife. His desperate grasp for power has lead to tragedy, he has lost all of the things and people he loved.…
The prophecies that were given to Macbeth by the witches, Lady Macbeth's persuation and plans, and Macbeth's ambition, all contributed greatly to his degeneration of character. This also resulted in Macbeth's downfall, which was death. Lady Macbeth uses her husband's pride to manipulate him into killing a king to become a king. The consequences for both were not what they had planned. Macbeth show that he is a tragic hero when he kills King Duncan.…
The thematic importance of ambition is revealed throughout MacBeth in a manner that is not always instantly visually evident to a conscientious reader. Although it is responsible for MacBeth's rise to power, his "vaulting ambition" is also to blame for MacBeth's tragic downfall. MacBeth would not have been able to achieve his power as King of Scotland, or have been able to carry out his evil deeds, if it was not for his ambition. In these instances, ambition helped MacBeth achieve his goals to a certain subdued degree. Consequently, however, MacBeth's ambition has another face and is what leads him to his disastrous fall from grace. Had he not been fixated with becoming King and remaining powerful, he would not have continued to kill innocent people in order to keep his position. In due course, MacBeth's removal from power is attributable to these killings, along with his over bearing attitude.…
The importance of this soliloquy shows the effects of the point of view on the tragedy. Macbeth’s motivations and struggles within himself to murder Duncan, very crucial parts to the story, are shown here in a soliloquy of dialogue to himself instead of being blatantly stated by the author. I think this stresses the weight of the decision and how much it troubled Macbeth, a clever tactic used by Shakespeare to further the major conflict of Macbeth vs. himself and the consequences of his actions. The length of this soliloquy, including the listing of Duncan’s positive attributes and his actions toward Macbeth, show that Macbeth understands he will kill a good man because of his own ambitions. Macbeth also recognizes the dark and murderous future…
