The Mayflower Compact The Mayflower Compact is a written document signed on November 11, 1620 by all 41 men of the Mayflower. It was named after the ship that sailed all 102 passengers to Cape Cod. The signing and creation of the Mayflower Compact was the beginning of the pilgrim’s settlement in the New World. The Mayflower Compact was an important part of American history because it was the first governing document in America and it helped maintain peace and order within the land. The Mayflower contained 102 passengers who set out to New England in order to find a more successful future for their families and themselves. The people among the ship agreed to work together to establish the rules of the covenant. In a 1973 painting by and American artist named Allyn Cox, the men of the Mayflower are signing their first official document regarding the way their land will be governed. They are located on the Mayflower itself and still docked on the harbor of Cape Cod. This painting shows an Indian man standing tall and proud-like next to his arrow. Across him is a pilgrim woman at a spinning wheel peacefully working. The men signing the document are dressed nice and are discussing the compact and expressing their ideas. The Mayflower Compact was designed with very normal and practically ideas. They referenced God and showed respect to their king. The pilgrims that created this document where the first to form a democratic society. This is very significant in American history because we practice ideas of democracy to this day. The Mayflower Compact led to a successful colonial settlement. The Mayflower Compact is believed to have influenced the makings of the Constitution and hence is considered one of the most important documents in American history.
