Significant Signpost Of The Giver By Lois Lowry

In The Giver, by Lois Lowry, again and again is a significant signpost that influences the story by showing how important the eyes are to see beyond and be “The Receiver”. In the story, Jonas is finally given his assignment, “The Receiver”. He is given his set of rules which almost completely contradict what he has learned all of his life. He now is able to do things such as lying and asking anyone questions which must be answered. He is told to meet the current Receiver at The Annex entrance behind the House of the Old. As soon as he meets the Receiver, he notices something. “Jonas recognized the man. He was the Elder who had seemed separate from the others at the Ceremony, though he was dressed in the same special clothing that only Elders
wore. Jonas looked self-consciously into the pale eyes that mirrored his own” (Lowry 95). This signpost is again and again in chapter 10. The pale eyes are rare in people and it popped up in baby Gabriel, Jonas, and the current Receiver. The eyes must be important to see beyond. The current Receiver now known as “The Giver”, is able to transfer his memories to Jonas. Later, Jonas tries this again to certain people including Gabriel. He’s able to do it to Gabriel, and only Gabriel. This proves that the eyes are really special and have the ability to see beyond. This influences the story because it foreshadows that Gabriel will become important throughout.
