First of all the concepts in this course were based on the guidelines of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics Standards for k-8 instruction. The council encourages teachers to encourage students by having fun while being taught for example fractions. Another way the concepts learned in this course are relevant to the characteristic of a professional mathematics teacher is the No Child Left behind Act. This course showed us ways to help the struggling child catch up with the class without making the child feel bad about…
In this Mathematics for Elementary Educators I course, it teaches me many concepts that a professional mathematics teacher should possess while teaching elementary students. The concepts has influences my own ideas and philosophy of teaching. In this reflection paper, I will also summarize the major mathematical concepts, explaining how the learning concepts are relevant to the characteristics of a professional mathematics teacher.…
Although the structure of the teaching of mathematics has remained somewhat constant in the way that a progressive system is employed, the pedagogies of mathematics changed. Historically, teaching techniques have been adapted in response to changes in philosophical and psychological theories. Now, the imposition…

The argument for abolishing the Electoral College has been around for a while, but rose to its peak in 2000 when George W. Bush was elected President despite losing the popular vote to Al Gore. The Electoral College is a voting system of 538 electors that vote on a state level based on the number of congressmen. The Electoral College is fair, simply due to the fact that the rules are known upfront. However, I don’t think the Popular Vote is fair at all it’s a system based on each indivual’s vote that decides the outcome of the election. The Electoral College vote doesn’t carry the same weight for every person’s vote. Every state is entitled to at least three electoral votes, regardless of whether or not the state’s population justifies it. This is basically giving them a second chance to win President or Vice President.…
In the following essay there will be four lesson plans discussed from four different websites. All of the lessons concentrate on the National Council for Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) Standards for Number Sense and Operations. The four lessons will be analyzed using the following criteria; the NCTM Standards, the use of differentiated instruction and the use of manipulative. The four lessons that will be looked into focus on addition, subtraction, fraction and number values.…
One of the challenges faced by adolescents is the belief they are “not good at math”. This may be imparted by their parents belief they were not good at mathematics and do not ask more from their children. There needs to be a shift from this belief from all adults involved. They must recognize and affirm the importance of mathematical literacy for all. In the Ministry’s Numeracy Report (2004), students need the “ability to deal with the fundamental notions of number and change in order to make sense of mathematical information presented in everyday contexts” (Paulos, 1988, pg.). Mathematical literacy in important for both employment and post-secondary admissions. Therefore, as teachers, we need to take advantage of the abundant opportunities for fostering mathematical literacy across the curriculum. As with Ms. Hastings, has a strong belief in the “Growth Mindset” by setting high expectations and showing student they can learn as opposed to the belief of “either you are good at math or…
Numbers and operations are applied when defining diverse types of numbers. The student must be able to categorize the different proportionality from dilations to non-proportionality relationships. The knowledge of expressions, equations and relationships are very important when wanting to solve some real-world problems, for instance, the calculating the volume of a cylinder to calculating the area of the square lot. Students should be able to master the measurement where students construct a scatterplot to determining the mean absolute deviation. These are just some key points of the goals and objectives and must be considered when providing the resources and tools for the students to perform…
Mathematics for Elementary Teachers is a two- part course designed to prepare potential educators the mathematical concepts need to teach to elementary schools students K-8. The two-part course also addresses the relationship concepts to the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics Standards for K-8 instruction (Billstein, Libeskind & Lott, 2010). This semester, which presented the second half the two-part course, the MTH/157 curriculum gave appropriate statistical methods to analysis data, applied basic concepts of probability, applied and identified geometric figures and shapes for problem solving, and identified applications of measurements.…
The math program the school was expected to use was cooperative learning and nondirective teaching based, thrusting 8th graders into this type of learning without mastery or theory into practice teaching was quickly leading to frustration and disengagement. The teachers worked to make the math content meaningful to the students by implementing some of inquiry based activities into the curriculum but not to the point to overwhelm the…
1. Relevant evidence is that which has the tendency to make a material issue more or less probable when presented before the court. The general rule for the admissibility of relevant evidence is Federal Rule of Evidence 402, which states that relevant evidence is admissible unless any of the following says otherwise: US Constitution, federal statutes, Federal Rules of Evidence, or any other rules set by the Supreme Court. The judge is the one makes the decision on if the evidence offered is relevant.…
Students in high school are forced to take Math classes and they are not allowed to completely skip them just because they dislike the subject, as the other students are not allowed to skip some classes like English. This paper will explore the reasons of Math being required in high school. In almost every organization and workplace, people are divided based on their math skill to high skill math and low skill math; the paper will also explore the differences between these two groups.…
Several reasons were given which cause the unsatisfactory results of the performance of our students in Mathematics, insufficient supply of textbooks, classroom and shortage of teachers. There are many studies which aim to find out and improve the performance of the students specifically in Mathematics.…
Mathematics is a subject recognized as the mother of all learning with other subjects deriving their concepts from it , in both the arts and sciences. It is also an international language and is essential in almost every field ; handling money, measurements in fashion, angles in sports such as bowling and billiards, technology and economics. Consequently, a good performance in the subject is important. However, there are lots of factors that became hindrances in the performance in Mathematics . Measuring the academic performance of students is challenging since student performance is product of socio-economic, psychological and environmental factors . The extent of student’s learning in mathematics may be determined by the grades of a student earns for a period of learning has been done. It is believed that a grade is main indicator of such learning.…
Most people are not familiar with the concepts of mathematics and mathematizing. Once they hear any of these terms, they connect them to education. The next discussion will attempt to shed some light on these two concepts by defining mathematics as a language. First, it will define these two terms with examples. It will then point out various differences between mathematics and mathematizing while giving examples. Finally, it will elaborate the importance of both concepts to humans and how they have affected people over time.…
