Immigration is a common phenomenon in the contemporary world. Travelling and adapting across cultures have turned into major issues and concerns of the contemporary globalizing environment . It’s impact is evident in the contemporary fiction as well. Whether it be diaspora writers of yester years or the present time, all of them feel the pangs of separation from their root and difficulty in adjusting in the new environment. A sense of loss and the struggle to survive in the new setting pervade their writings. Besides, a crisis of communication between the cultures is also evident. It is through literature that many of them try to come to terms with their immigrant condition. They try “to find a voice of their own by making the two worlds they are forced to live in…

I have read your essay “Hip Hop Planet,” and the subject of this article is about teens being taken over by hip hop music. I understood the occasion because you had a nightmare when your daughter brought home a thug/rapper. A lot of your life you tried and ignored hip hop. Hip hop has spread out through all around the world. In 26 years you have come to embrace this style of music. I believe you wrote this article because you are worried about the influence it would have on our future civilization and I believe the intended audience was us young adults.…

The preparation of a written business plan is not the end-result of the planning process. The realization of that plan is the ultimate goal. However, the writing of the plan is an important intermediate stage - fail to plan can mean plan to fail. For an established business it demonstrates that careful consideration has been given to the business's development, and for a startup it shows that the entrepreneur has done his or her homework.…

It’s a simple story of a powerful woman. A story of an Indian girl who came from conservative Chennai to pursue higher studies in the US with little money and no safety net. If she failed, she failed. A story of this determined girl, who while studying in Connecticut, worked as a receptionist from midnight to sunrise to earn money and struggled to put together US$50 to buy herself a western suit for her first job interview out of Yale, where she had just completed her masters. Incidentally, she wasn’t comfortable trying out a formal western outfit and ended up buying trousers that reached down only till her ankles. Rejected at the interview, she turned to her professor at the school who asked her what she would wear if she were to be in India. To her reply that it would be a sari, the professor advised her to “be yourself” and stick to what she was comfortable with. She wore a sari for her next interview. She got the job and has followed this philosophy for the rest of her career. She’s been herself, never tried to change her basic beliefs, derived strength from her traditions and believed in who she is. As she says, “I’m so secure in myself, I don’t have to be American to play in the corporate life.” She worked hard and in time was counted as one of the most powerful women in the world by Forbes. In this edition of ‘My Story’ we present Indra Nooyi, President & Chief Financial Officer PepsiCo, Inc – a story that is both inspiring in its simplicity and grand in its achievement.…

Echinococcus granulosus is a small, three-segmented tapeworm about 8mm long found worldwide. The adults are parasites in the small intestine of carnivores, dogs, wolves and jackals where they lay eggs. They usually cause little or no damage in dog, but the eggs passes out with the faeces and when eaten by intermediate host, mainly sheep, cattle, horses, pigs or humans. A larva hatches from the egg, penetrates the gut, and migrates to various tissues, especially liver, spleen, muscle, and brain. The larva of Echinococcus develops into a spherical fluid-filled cyst called a hydatid cyst. This cyst can reach 150mm in diameter, contains numerous secondary cysts (germinal epithelium) or broad capsules in which thousands of future larvae (called protoscolices) develop usually in the liver and lungs. If the hydatid cyst ruptures, the brood capsules can spill out of the cyst, metastasize to other sites, and develop into a hydatid cyst and is responsible for hydatid disease (hydatidosis). Thus, ingestion of a single egg can give rise to several hydatid cysts, each containing several brood capsules (Oxford Concise Veterinary Dictionary. 2002) (Brooks, Carroll, Butel. (2007).…

Coming into Winston Salem State I was going to major in Accounting, until I took Principles of Financial Management my first semester here. I did really well in the class, but it came down to me having to pass the final exam in order to pass the class. The exams giving throughout the year were mainly short answer and a few multiple choice questions, but the final exam was all multiple choice. I made a B on the final, which was the highest grade I made out of all the exams. I didn’t like that and the fact that the professor told us that if we made a C in the course we shouldn’t go on to accounting two. I did let it discourage me and somewhat had an effect on changing my major, but I should have not let that change my mind. In another course we had quizzes every Thursday, I missed two quizzes (due to surgery and illness) and it brought me from a high C to a D. The professor always told me to email him even when I had questions for the final exam and asked if I could meet with him to go over the study guide. When I took the exam I couldn’t answer many questions because I felt like I didn’t have extra help and even tutors here on campus couldn’t help me, but that’s another issue. I feel that the curriculum for business maybe a little challenging at times. Also, professors should always encourage their students and help them when they need help, but not by email. I decided to pick up the Human Resource Concentration last spring and so far I like the HR program. I do like the fact that the professor’s help you become professional by correcting your emails and allowing us to dress professionally on Wednesdays. I also like the conferences and programs that are set up to help us get internships and prepare us for the real world. This semester I feel that it will be a lot better because I have professors that will push, challenge me and still help and guide me every step of the way. I like to learn, especially learning new things and I like the…
