SIG: This is significant because many American pagan religions contain different traditions that are similar to to others. Also traditions have been passed down for thousands of years.…
Greco-Roman pagan societies feature the belief in many gods and deities, with their immense power create phenomena such as thunderstorms and volcanoes. In these societies, when something positive occurs, you are to give praise and make a sacrifice to the gods. But when something negative occurs like a disaster, these societies believe that you have angered the gods and will suffer their wrath. But when looking at these two occurrences, neither one these events are seen as the right thing or the malicious thing. There is no concept of that idea in these societies. While looking at Judeo-Christian societies they do have the concept of good and evil. When you do something honorable…
Magliocco defines "Neo-Paganism" as others have before her as "a movement of new religions that attempt to revive, revitalize, and experiment with aspects of pre-Christian polytheism" (Magliocco 4). She continues to tell us that the Neo-Pagan goal is to gain a "deeper connection with the sacred, with nature, and with community" (4). This definition does not include any acts performed in the religion that may turn off any scientific readers from the start. Instead it is a broad yet exact definition that describes the religion from a rational standpoint.…
There are many traditions of Wicca, but the unifying theme found within all is fertility. As in ancient societies the sabbats observed by Wiccans celebrate the planting and harvesting times, or in other words, the cycles of the earth's fertility. The Beltane Sabbat is held near the end of Spring which is the start of planting season. There are many different ways that Beltane is celebrated, but the focus is always upon fertility. This is the time when the Earth Mother opens herself to the Fertility God, and their union brings about healthy livestock, strong crops, and new life. The Great Rite is celebrated during Beltane which, through the use of sympathetic magic, enacts this sacred marriage of the God and the…
Growing up I was raised in a Christian household being taught of good vs. evil and God being the ALMIGHTY. However, as I grew older I started to form my own opinions on life and religion. I started to look into my family history and other religions. I shortly found out that I actually in fact came from a PAGEN background. After that I wanted to learn everything I could possibly know about Paganism. When most people think of Paganism they think of WITCHS or DEVIL WORSHIPERS… It's simply an umbrella term covering many different religions and belief systems. Upon doing all the research on Paganism I stumbled across stories of the Salem Witch Trails, and it very much struck my interest which lead to more research on the trails.…
Natsha, I have to disagree with your assessment regarding faith healers and Shamanism. It is one thing to believe that God works through doctors, surgeons, nurses, and other medically trained professionals. Faith healers are nothing more than skilled actors that put on a show and take money from sick, hopeless families, in search of a miracle for themselves or their loved ones. This is clearly documented by several different sources, two very different videos prove that some if not all faith healers are only out for money, not truly sent by God to heal the sick and desperate. “A Question of Miracles, Part 1 &2” (www.youtube.com/watch?v=WmclWMdKLs8, www.youtube.com/watch?v=BeT8Mx2Lrr8), and “Peter Popoff, Fraidulent Faith Healer” (www.youtube.com/watch?v=SNl52deOZro).…

The word "pagan" according to the "Pocket Oxford American Dictionary" is "a person holding religious beliefs other than those of the main world religions." It is a derogatory term that has origins to the Latin word 'paganus ' which means 'civilian heathen ' (Oxford Dictionary, 600). Pagans have always be made out to be evil heretical people, who are the devil 's advocate; practicing sorcery, necromancy and other evil deeds. This term comes up in the novel many times, when the Calvinist refer to the Wampanoag, and it is specific to the fact that they come from a faith that is based outside the church. However, this tribe is far from the demon-worshipping, savage heretics that the Colonist would have us believe. They are an extremely peaceful and harmonious people, they practice what might be considered "magick" during rituals, however it is far from evil and serves only as a cultural tradition handed down from generation to generation for the preservation and sanctity of their lifestyle and spirit.…

What Wicca is not is one of the biggest issues in my life presently because of my recent religion change. Wicca does not embrace the concepts of sin, heaven or hell, the evils of sex or nudity, confession, Satanism, animal sacrifice, or the inferiority of women. Wicca is not a fashion statement, and you do not have to dress a certain way to be a "real Wiccan."…
“I’ll get you my pretty and your little dog too”, a famous quote from The Wizard of Oz, warns Dorothy that she cannot escape from the Wicked Witch of the West’s wrath. A threat that according to the ancient Greek and Roman authors is something to fear and while the witches of their time did not have green skin, they were just as horrifying. Apuleius, Lucan, and Petronius demonstrate the horrors that witches are capable of in their accounts of experiences with Magical women.…
In the beginning, the Wiccan religion was known as witchcraft and those who practiced it were witches. Wicca was also known as “the old religion” and has become the evil side of the Christian realm of beliefs. Within the Wiccan religion there is no belief in an evil entity, this is based on the Christian faith creating the belief that witches are devil worshippers or Satanists. The Christians use the words “heathen” and “pagan” to describe and define witches. To those who are Wiccan these words are not derogatory, but rather are complementary. These words, in Latin, actually mean that they dwell on the heath, or uncultivated land, and in the country (Buckland, 2001). Paganism is defined as a nature based religion that follows ancient views, beliefs, and practices and is commonly referred to as Wiccan or witches and is a pre-Christian religion from which the rituals and beliefs of the Christian faith stem…
