The leaders of the world use fear to gain control over society. In 1984 and V for Vendetta the government, or the Inner Party in the novel’s case, used fear to control and manipulate the people under their ruling. Vaporizing and arrest kept the citizens of Oceania
and Britain devoted to the Party and the government because if one person tried to speak out about the reality of how the government and the party wield their everyday lives it could cause an uproar like in V for Vendetta. In both dystopias they had similar forms of policeman, the Thought Police and the Finger men. Each set of policemen “arrested” people and execute them or take them to places like Larkhill Detention Center or The Ministry of Love where they tortured them. This method scared many people and caused them to overlook the wrongdoings of the government. On the other hand, Evey and Winston‘s fear had two different results. Both of their fears were used against them, but where Evey had a positive affect, Winston had a negative effect. V stimulated a mock prison that helped Evey learn to not live in fear and be more confident in who she is and what she had been through.
