As the President he made the Republican party into a strong organization. Then he issued the emancipation proclamation. Which freed the slaves , but caused the country to go into war. Even on the brink of war he managed to get most northern democrats to join the Unions cause. Shortly after the victory of the civil war , lincoln was assassinated by John Wilkes Booth . On good friday April 4 1865 Lincoln attended a play at Ford's’ theatre.(1) With him were his wife and a captain named Henry R. Rathbone. Also his fiance Clara Harris was there. Booth fought his way to the balcony and shot lincoln. Booth then dropped his gun ,and stabbed Rathborne. Booth then jumped off the balcony , down a banner breaking his leg. He grew up in a time where Jim Crow laws made everyday life a struggle.(2) His parents Michael king .SR and Alberta Williams were both Baptist. Going to the Baptist Church exposed king to lots of activism and protest. (4) As a child he didn’t do much. He learned about peace and Christianity through going to church. This would later help him in the civil rights movement later in his life. When King turned 24 he got married to Corvetta Scott. (4) Afterwards he attended the Morehouse College in Atlanta Georgia. Then he went into more schooling. He later received his doctorate from Boston University School of theology. As job he became a pastor of the Dexter Avenue Baptist Church in Montgomery Alabama. Soon afterwards he led the Montgomery bus boycott. During his prime King received the nobel peace prize in 1964. He also attended the signing of the civil rights act by President Lyndon Johnson.(2) Unfortunately King was also assassinated. On April 4 1969 he was shot on the balcony of the Lorraine motel in Tennessee. His last words were “ be sure to sing precious lord tonight and sing it well.”.
